Chapter 19 - THE POINT OF NO RETURN

Cross refused to speak.
Vale requested immunity.
Helix lawyers denied everything.
The empty vial meant one thing.
Someone had removed Grace’s sample before the plane left.
The chain-of-custody records showed only four people had handled the case after the hospital.
Samuel.
Vale.
Cross.
And Ryan.
I stared at him across the interrogation room.
“You touched the sample?”
His face drained.
“At the hospital.”
“When?”
“Before I came back to your room.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did you do?”
“Helix told me to verify the label.”
“Did you remove anything?”
“No.”
Luka stood against the wall.
“Think carefully.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“I gave it to a courier.”
“Name?”
“I don’t know.”
“Description?”
Ryan thought.
Then froze.
“What?”
I asked.
“He had a ring.”
“What kind?”
“Silver.”
“Black stone.”
Luka’s expression changed.
He pulled out his phone.
He showed Ryan a photograph.
An older man.
Silver ring.
Black stone.
Ryan nodded.
“That’s him.”
Luka lowered the phone.
I looked at him.
“Who is he?”
“My father’s former deputy.”
“Marco Bellini.”
The name sounded familiar.
Then I remembered.
Marco.
The man Luka had called from the hospital.
The man helping secure the Moretti estate.
The man who knew where Grace was.
My blood turned cold.
“He works for you.”
Luka’s face hardened.
“I thought he did.”
We returned to the estate.
Marco was gone.
So was one of the medical freezers.
My mother and Grace were safe.
But a note had been left on the kitchen table.
Antonio should have finished what he started.
Luka crushed the paper in his fist.
“My father trusted him.”
My father looked grim.
“Marco believed Antonio became weak.”
“What does he want?”
“The origin key.”
“Why?”
My father answered.
“To sell the complete M-17 process.”
A phone rang.
Luka answered.
Marco’s voice filled the speaker.
“Bring Michael Carter.”
“Where?”
Marco gave an address.
An abandoned research facility owned by the Morettis decades earlier.
Luka’s face changed when he heard it.
“What is that place?”
I asked.
“Where Gabriel died.”
My biological donor.
Luka’s uncle.
The man whose genetic material had been used in both my creation and Grace’s conception.
The center of the entire nightmare.
My father looked at Luka.
“He didn’t die there.”
Luka stared.
“What?”
“Gabriel survived the original accident.”
“Antonio hid him.”
“Just like he hid me.”
“Then what happened?”
My father’s eyes filled with regret.
“Gabriel wanted M-17 commercialized.”
“He believed his contribution entitled him to control it.”
“Antonio disagreed.”
“They fought.”
“One night, Gabriel tried to remove the samples.”
“Marco helped him.”
Luka’s face went pale.
“What happened?”
“Gabriel was killed.”
“By who?”
My father looked down.
“Antonio.”
Silence filled the room.
Luka turned away.
Every generation had inherited another secret.
Another decision made in the name of protection.
I was tired of it.
“We end this.”
My father looked at me.
“How?”
“We give Marco what he wants.”
Luka turned.
“No.”
“Not the real key.”
My father understood first.
“You want to corrupt it.”
“Yes.”
He smiled faintly.
“Questions are more important than answers.”
I nodded.
“So let’s give him the wrong answer.”
We created a fake origin key.
One subtle alteration.
Enough to make the sequence useless.
Then we went to the facility.
Marco waited inside the old laboratory.
Grace’s sample sat in a freezer behind him.
He had three armed men.
Luka had two.
My father carried the fake key.
I carried nothing.
Marco smiled when he saw me.
“The famous M-17.”
“I have a name.”
“Names are sentimental.”
“My father said the same thing about science without ethics.”
Marco’s smile faded.
Michael stepped forward.
“The key for the sample.”
Marco gestured toward the freezer.
My father handed him a drive.
Marco inserted it into a terminal.
Numbers appeared.
He smiled.
Then I said.
“You really think my father would hand you twenty-six years of research without protecting it?”
Marco’s smile vanished.
The screen flashed red.
CORRUPTED.
He reached for his gun.
Luka moved first.
Everything happened fast.
A shot struck the ceiling.
Glass shattered.
Marco’s men dropped their weapons as federal agents entered from the rear corridor.
Luka had transmitted the entire meeting.
Marco was arrested.
The freezer was secured.
Grace’s sample was recovered.
The real origin key never left my father’s memory.
Three weeks later, he wrote it down one final time.
Then burned it.
I watched the paper turn to ash.
So did Luka.
So did Evelyn.
No copies.
No patents.
No secret backups.
M-17 ended with us.
Or at least the research did.
Grace remained proof that my father’s work had succeeded.
But she would never become a product.
May you like
Neither would I.
And for the first time in twenty-five years, that choice belonged to me.
