Chapter Ten: The Trial

Three weeks later...
The steps of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Federal Courthouse were lined with cameras.
Satellite trucks crowded every available curb.
Reporters from around the world waited behind police barricades.
No celebrity trial in recent memory had attracted this level of attention.
The case had grown far beyond a corporate dispute.
It now involved securities fraud.
Money laundering.
Corporate espionage.
Bribery.
Conspiracy.
And the attempted theft of one of America's largest privately held business empires.
At precisely 8:55 a.m., a convoy of black vehicles pulled to the courthouse entrance.
Eleanor Hart stepped out first.
She wore a navy suit with a single silver brooch—her mother's.
No bodyguards surrounded her.
Only Amelia Brooks and two attorneys walked beside her.
The crowd erupted.
"Miss Hart!"
"Did your husband steal your company?"
"Will you seek criminal charges against Damian Crosswell?"
"Is your marriage officially over?"
Eleanor stopped for exactly one moment.
She looked toward the cameras.
"My purpose has never been revenge."
She paused.
"It's accountability."
Then she walked inside.
Across the street...
Another vehicle arrived.
Damian stepped out alone.
The cheers that once greeted him at shareholder meetings had disappeared.
Questions replaced admiration.
Microphones followed him like shadows.
"Mr. Crosswell!"
"Did you know about Gregory Walsh's fraud?"
"Did you knowingly benefit from stolen assets?"
"Are you cooperating with federal investigators?"
Damian answered none of them.
His lawyer leaned close.
"Remember."
"Only answer questions inside the courtroom."
Damian nodded.
But his eyes searched the courthouse steps.
They found Eleanor disappearing through the entrance.
For the first time...
He wished he had followed her years earlier instead of walking ahead alone.
Courtroom 17B
Judge Rebecca Lawson entered promptly at nine-thirty.
"Be seated."
The courtroom settled into silence.
Federal prosecutors occupied one side.
Defense attorneys filled the other.
The public gallery overflowed with journalists, investors, and former employees.
Richard Hart sat quietly in the second row.
He had declined every interview.
This was not a media event to him.
It was the conclusion of a promise made to his father decades earlier.
Judge Lawson adjusted her glasses.
"The United States versus Gregory Walsh and associated defendants."
She glanced toward the prosecution.
"Call your first witness."
The prosecutor stood.
"The government calls Victor Lang."
Victor Lang walked to the witness stand.
He looked older than he had only weeks before.
Years of carrying secrets had finally caught up with him.
After taking the oath, the prosecutor began.
"Mr. Lang, how long were you Chief Financial Officer of Crosswell Technologies?"
"Eleven years."
"During that time, who approved major financial decisions?"
"Officially?"
"Mr. Crosswell."
"And unofficially?"
Victor looked across the courtroom.
His eyes met Eleanor's.
"Whenever the company faced collapse..."
"...Miss Hart."
A murmur swept through the gallery.
The prosecutor continued.
"Did Mr. Crosswell know she was making those decisions?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Victor hesitated.
"Because she never wanted credit."
"And because..."
He sighed.
"...he never asked."
Damian lowered his head.
Every sentence felt heavier than the last.
His attorney whispered,
"Stay calm."
But calm had become impossible.
The prosecution called its next witness.
Vanessa Sinclair.
She entered under federal protection.
Gone were the designer gowns.
Gone was the confidence.
She wore a simple gray suit.
Her voice trembled as she took the oath.
The prosecutor approached.
"Ms. Sinclair..."
"Why did you begin a relationship with Damian Crosswell?"
She closed her eyes.
"Because I was paid."
Gasps echoed through the courtroom.
Damian looked up sharply.
"You were paid by whom?"
"A man known only as..."
"...Mr. Black."
The prosecutor displayed photographs of encrypted payments.
Bank transfers.
Luxury purchases.
Offshore deposits.
Every dollar traced back to shell companies connected to Gregory Walsh.
Vanessa continued.
"I was told to isolate Eleanor."
"To destroy her marriage."
"To make Damian stop trusting her."
"And the necklace?"
"I planted it."
"Why?"
"So Damian would publicly humiliate Eleanor."
The courtroom became silent.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
"Did Eleanor Hart know any part of this plan?"
Vanessa looked directly toward Eleanor.
"No."
"She was the target."
During the lunch recess...
Damian stood alone in a quiet hallway.
He heard footsteps behind him.
Turning, he saw Eleanor.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally, he said,
"I didn't know."
She looked at him calmly.
"I believe you."
His eyes widened.
"You... do?"
"I believe you didn't know about Gregory."
"I believe you didn't know about Vanessa."
"I believe you didn't know about Mr. Black."
She stepped closer.
"But none of those things made you hit me."
The words landed harder than any verdict.
"You chose that."
"You chose not to trust me."
"You chose humiliation over a conversation."
Damian's shoulders slumped.
"I've replayed that night a thousand times."
"So have I."
"I'd give anything to change it."
Eleanor shook her head gently.
"That's the problem with choices."
"We only understand their cost after we've made them."
She walked away before he could answer.
That afternoon...
The prosecution introduced its final witness of the day.
Gregory Walsh.
Still wearing prison attire.
Still in handcuffs.
He accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.
The prosecutor asked,
"Who instructed you to create the shell companies?"
Gregory smiled bitterly.
"You all keep asking the wrong question."
"What is the right question?"
"Not who."
He looked directly at Eleanor.
"But why."
The prosecutor frowned.
"Explain."
Gregory leaned forward.
"Mr. Black never cared about money."
"He cared about legacy."
"He wanted both families destroyed."
"And he almost succeeded."
The courtroom grew completely still.
Judge Lawson looked over her glasses.
"Do you know his identity?"
Gregory nodded slowly.
"I've never seen his face."
"But I know his real name."
Every person in the courtroom leaned forward.
The prosecutor asked quietly,
"What is it?"
Gregory answered.
"Jonathan Pierce."
Richard Hart's expression changed instantly.
Amelia's pen stopped moving.
Even Eleanor looked genuinely surprised.
Richard whispered under his breath,
"I thought he was dead..."
Judge Lawson struck her gavel.
"Order."
But the damage had already been done.
For the first time...
The mysterious Mr. Black had a name.
And every person connected to the Hart and Crosswell families suddenly understood...
May you like
The real trial had only just begun.
