CHAPTER 1 – THE MIDNIGHT TAKEOVER

Marcus stood in the center of the presidential suite with a glass of champagne in one hand while his mistress, Vanessa, admired herself in the floor-to-ceiling mirrors.

"Can you believe she actually thought this hotel belonged to her?" Vanessa laughed as she fastened Isabella's sapphire brooch to her dress.

Marcus smiled.

"It belongs to me now."

Outside the suite, security escorted Isabella through the marble lobby.

Employees avoided eye contact.

Some looked ashamed.

Others simply looked afraid.

No one dared challenge the CEO.

By the time Isabella reached the front entrance, rain had begun to fall.

She didn't cry.

She simply dialed one number.

"Father."

A brief silence.

Then Richard Ashford, founder of the Ashford International Hospitality Group, spoke calmly.

"Has he finally crossed the line?"

"Yes."

"I've waited eleven years for you to say that."

Within minutes, encrypted emails left the Ashford Family Office.

Corporate attorneys were awakened.

Board members received emergency notifications.

Investment banks confirmed ownership records that had remained hidden behind holding companies for more than a decade.

Marcus never knew that every hotel he believed he owned had actually been financed through Ashford Capital.

The shares had never belonged to him.

He had merely been appointed CEO.

Nothing more.

At 10:47 p.m., every regional manager received identical instructions.

Effective immediately:

Marcus Bennett's executive authority is suspended pending board review.

No approvals.

No financial access.

No operational control.

The orders arrived so quickly that managers assumed a cyberattack.

Then legal verification followed.

By 11:22 p.m., Marcus attempted to approve a multi-million-dollar investment.

ACCESS DENIED.

He frowned.

He tried again.

ACCESS REVOKED.

"What is this?" he shouted.

His assistant turned pale.

"Sir..."

"The board... they're saying you no longer have authority."

Marcus laughed.

"Impossible."

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered confidently.

Instead of a greeting...

He heard Richard Ashford.

"You've been managing my family's hotels for eleven years."

A pause.

"But tonight..."

"You've been fired."

The line went dead.

May you like

For the first time that evening...

Marcus felt genuine fear.
