Chapter 11 - THE POLICY

Rachel arrived at Jennifer’s mother’s house before sunrise.

By 7:30, she had contacted the insurance company.

The policy existed.

It had been opened eleven months earlier.

Three weeks after Jennifer discovered she was pregnant.

The application had been submitted through an independent insurance broker.

Jennifer stared at Rachel across the kitchen table.

“How did they issue it without examining me?”

Rachel looked grim.

“It appears to be a simplified underwriting policy combined with financial documentation.”

“My signature is forged.”

“I agree.”

Jennifer’s mother held Lily in the next room.

Jennifer kept her voice low.

“Can Daniel collect if we divorce?”

“Beneficiary designations can be changed depending on ownership.”

“Who owns the policy?”

Rachel paused.

“Redwood Family Holdings.”

Jennifer stared at her.

“The company tied to Chloe’s townhouse?”

“Yes.”

Jennifer leaned back.

It was worse than she expected.

Daniel had built an entity separate from their normal household finances.

He had used it for property.

Transfers.

And now life insurance.

Rachel continued.

“The premium payments came from an account we haven’t identified yet.”

“Can we shut it down?”

“We can notify the insurer of suspected fraud immediately.”

“Do it.”

Rachel studied her.

“Jennifer.”

“What?”

“I need you to understand something.”

“This does not mean Daniel intended physical harm.”

“I know.”

“A forged policy is financial fraud.”

“Not proof of anything else.”

“I know.”

But Jennifer also knew why Rachel was saying it.

Because both of them were thinking the same frightening thought.

Why secretly insure your pregnant wife for two million dollars?

Daniel called at 8:14.

Jennifer declined.

He called again.

Then again.

Finally, a message arrived.

We need to discuss Lily.

Jennifer forwarded it to Rachel.

Rachel advised her to respond only about the baby.

Jennifer typed.

You may communicate through the parenting app once established.

Daniel replied immediately.

Stop turning this into a war.

Jennifer looked at the sentence for a long time.

Then another arrived.

You have no idea what you’re doing.

Rachel took the phone.

“That one we save.”

Later that morning, Chloe sent another photograph.

The storage unit had been sealed pending legal review.

Before leaving, she had photographed the exterior labels of several boxes.

One read.

JR MEDICAL.

Another.

POSTPARTUM.

Jennifer stared at the words.

Rachel’s expression tightened.

“Did Daniel ever ask about your health after delivery?”

“All the time.”

“How?”

Jennifer thought back.

He had asked whether her blood pressure remained high.

Whether the doctor was worried about clots.

Whether she still had dizziness.

She had believed he was finally being attentive.

Her chest tightened.

Rachel repeated.

“This still proves nothing beyond suspicious documentation.”

Jennifer nodded.

“I know.”

Then her phone rang.

It was the insurance investigator.

He had reviewed the application.

There was one detail Jennifer needed to hear immediately.

The broker who submitted her policy application was not a stranger.

May you like

It was Daniel’s college roommate.
