Chapter 17 - WHAT DANIEL FINALLY ADMITTED
Daniel initially denied fraud.
Then investigators showed him the ledger.
He blamed Eric.
Eric blamed Daniel.
Martin produced investment documents.
Daniel blamed his father.
His father produced the forged deed.
Daniel blamed Chloe.
Chloe produced messages.
Then investigators showed him the insurance application.
Daniel stopped talking.
Three days later, he accepted a proffer interview.
Not a plea.
Not yet.
Just an opportunity to tell investigators what he knew.
Jennifer did not attend.
Rachel later summarized it.
Daniel admitted forging Jennifer’s signature on the insurance paperwork.
He admitted falsifying his father’s signature on the lake property transfer.
He admitted using foundation money.
He admitted misleading investors.
He admitted hiding assets while planning the divorce.
Jennifer listened silently.
Then Rachel continued.
“He denies ever intending to harm you.”
Jennifer looked at her.
“Did he explain the searches?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“He claims he researched the insurance because you had complications late in pregnancy.”
Jennifer stared at her.
“That somehow makes it better?”
“No.”
“He says he was afraid he would be left with Lily and debt.”
Jennifer felt a chill.
“So he secretly increased the value of my death.”
Rachel did not argue.
Jennifer asked.
“What did he mean by projected money?”
“He says he treated the policy like a contingent asset in his private notes.”
Jennifer laughed without humor.
“My life was a contingent asset.”
Rachel’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry.”
Jennifer looked toward the window.
For months she had wanted Daniel to admit everything.
Now that he had, the truth felt almost too ugly to hold.
There was one question left.
“Did he love Chloe?”
Rachel paused.
“That did come up.”
Jennifer looked at her.
“Why?”
“Investigators asked about financial motives.”
“What did he say?”
Rachel hesitated.
“He said Chloe represented a reset.”
Jennifer closed her eyes.
Not love.
A reset.
A new family.
A new story.
A woman who did not know about his debts.
A baby he could present as another symbol of responsibility.
Jennifer suddenly felt something unexpected for Chloe.
Not friendship.
Not forgiveness.
Recognition.
Daniel had used both women differently.
Jennifer as stability.
Chloe as escape.
Lily as image.
Jacob as leverage.
His parents as access.
His employer as credibility.
Everyone had been assigned a function.
That was how Daniel understood relationships.
Jennifer asked.
“What happens now?”
Rachel closed the file.
“Criminal proceedings.”
“Divorce.”
“Custody.”
“Asset recovery.”
“And a lot of waiting.”
Jennifer looked toward Lily.
“No.”
She smiled faintly.
