Chapter 3: Consequences

Three months later, Noah sat alone inside a small apartment.

The walls were bare.

The furniture was cheap.

The silence was unbearable.

Claire had moved out two weeks earlier.

The relationship that had seemed so exciting in secret had collapsed under reality.

Arguments replaced romance.

Bills replaced fantasies.

Eventually, Claire left.

Noah now spent most evenings staring at his phone, hoping for a message from Lily.

Most days, none came.

Meanwhile, Ava's life slowly began to heal.

The divorce moved quickly.

The evidence of Noah's affair made everything straightforward.

Lily focused on school again.

The laughter gradually returned to the house.

One Saturday afternoon, mother and daughter sat on the back patio drinking lemonade.

For the first time in months, they felt peaceful.

Then Ava received a phone call.

It was Noah.

She considered ignoring it.

Instead, she answered.

"What do you want?"

His voice sounded tired.

"I just wanted to hear Lily's voice."

Ava looked at her daughter.

Lily shook her head.

Not yet.

Ava understood.

"Noah," she said quietly, "some mistakes have consequences."

He remained silent.

Then she ended the call.

For the first time since discovering the affair, she felt completely free.
