CHAPTER 2 – Five Minutes to Midnight

The first helicopter circled above Blackthorn Manor.
Then a second.
Then a third.
Nathan frowned and walked toward the windows overlooking the estate.
"What the hell is this?"
Celeste forced a laugh.
"Probably a news helicopter."
Before anyone could answer, every light inside the mansion flickered.
The chandeliers dimmed.
The security monitors went black.
Nathan pulled out his phone.
No signal.
A second later, every executive in his contacts began calling through the satellite emergency line.
His chief financial officer was the first.
"Nathan!" the man shouted. "Our corporate accounts have been frozen!"
Nathan's expression hardened.
"What are you talking about?"
"The banks say there's an international fraud investigation!"
Another call interrupted.
"Our Singapore office has been raided."
Another.
"The Zurich accounts are inaccessible."
Another.
"The board is demanding an emergency meeting."
Nathan looked at me.
For the first time that night...
He wasn't angry.
He was frightened.
Outside, black SUVs poured through the gates.
Men and women in dark business suits stepped out alongside federal investigators carrying sealed evidence cases.
The front doors opened.
No one had invited them.
An older gentleman entered without hesitation.
Silver hair.
Tailored navy suit.
Quiet authority.
He looked at me first.
"My daughter."
I smiled through the pain.
"Hi, Dad."
Nathan stared.
"You..."
The older man extended his hand calmly.
"My name is William Hartley."
"I believe you've heard a very different version."
Nathan's face slowly lost all color.
William Hartley wasn't a retired accountant.
He was the founder of Hartley International Holdings—a private investment empire with interests in banking, logistics, cybersecurity, and international shipping.
The company Nathan had spent years trying to compete against.
The company powerful enough to erase his overnight.
Dad looked around the grand hall.
"Record every injury."
Doctors rushed toward me.
Behind them came forensic investigators.
No one spoke to Nathan.
They simply began documenting everything.
The whip.
The blood.
The broken glass.
May you like
The recordings.
The empire Nathan believed he controlled had just become evidence.
