Chapter 1 – The Boardroom Reckoning

The convoy carried me straight to Ward Global Headquarters.
By the time I entered the executive boardroom, every director was already standing.
Not because I demanded it.
Because they knew exactly who held the controlling vote.
"Good evening, Ms. Ward."
I acknowledged them with a quiet nod before taking the chair at the head of the long walnut table.
For four years, I had attended meetings as Daniel's quiet advisor.
Tonight, I attended as Chairwoman.
The General Counsel slid a thick binder toward me.
"Emergency Resolution Number Twelve."
I opened the file.
Independent auditors had completed their preliminary review.
Corporate funds had been diverted into personal luxury expenses.
Unauthorized executive bonuses.
Private jet vacations disguised as business travel.
A penthouse purchased through a subsidiary.
Jewelry.
Sports cars.
And one engagement ring billed to the company under "client relations."
Daniel entered the room just as the first page was projected onto the screen.
He looked exhausted.
"Elena..."
The Chairman interrupted him.
"You are here only to respond to the findings."
Daniel looked around the room.
The directors who once applauded his speeches wouldn't even meet his eyes.
He finally understood.
They had never answered to him.
They answered to the family trust.
And the trust answered to me.
The vote was swift.
Twelve in favor.
None opposed.
Daniel Ward was removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
The security badge hanging from his jacket deactivated with a soft electronic beep.
May you like
It sounded almost insignificant.
Yet it marked the end of everything he believed he owned.
