Chapter 3 – The Truth Behind the Marriage

Later that afternoon, Charles invited Emily into his private office.

A framed family photograph rested on the bookshelf.

Emily smiled sadly.

"I haven't been here since Aunt Margaret's memorial."

Charles sighed.

"I respected your decision to build your own life without using the family name."

Emily nodded.

"I wanted people to value me—not my last name."

"So why didn't you tell your husband?"

She looked out the window.

"Because I wanted to know whether he loved me."

The answer had arrived long before today.

Ryan had slowly changed over the years.

Success became more important than loyalty.

Status replaced kindness.

Victoria simply became the final excuse.

Meanwhile, investigators discovered something else.

Ryan had secretly submitted financial documents claiming Emily had abandoned the marriage.

He planned to pressure her into signing away her share of several jointly owned investments.

Unfortunately for him...

Every document contained false statements.

Charles quietly handed the file to the Foundation's legal advisor.

"I believe the district attorney should review these."

By evening, Ryan's attorney called repeatedly.

Emily declined every request to meet.
