Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL

Nathaniel vanished at 6:20 p.m.

Briarwood claimed a family guardian had authorized emergency transfer.

The guardian was Richard.

The court order used to justify it had been signed twelve minutes earlier.

By a judge who had attended Willow’s anniversary party.

Michael threw the printed order onto the table.

“They’re not even hiding it.”

Helena shook her head.

“They don’t need to if everyone involved belongs to the same circle.”

Willow called Lucas.

He answered immediately.

“Where is Nathaniel?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do not lie to me.”

“I swear.”

“Your father transferred him.”

Lucas exhaled.

“I’m not with my father.”

“Where are you?”

“Home.”

Willow almost laughed.

The house they had shared.

The house he had already told her she could not enter.

“I need access to your father’s schedule.”

“Why?”

“Because wherever he went tonight may tell me where Nathaniel is.”

Lucas went silent.

Then he said.

“Come here.”

“No.”

“Willow, I’ll give you everything.”

She looked at Michael.

He shook his head.

Willow ignored him.

“One hour.”

She arrived with Helena waiting outside.

Lucas opened the door.

He looked terrible.

No suit jacket.

No tie.

Dark circles beneath his eyes.

For the first time, he did not resemble Richard.

He resembled a frightened man whose entire identity had collapsed.

Willow walked past him.

The house looked exactly as she had left it.

Anniversary flowers still stood on the entry table.

Her wedding photograph remained above the fireplace.

She hated it.

Lucas handed her an iPad.

“My father’s assistant syncs his calendar with our family office.”

Willow searched.

Two appointments had been deleted.

But recently deleted events remained visible.

7:00 p.m.

HARTWELL MEDICAL CENTER.

Private psychiatric intake.

Willow looked up.

“Hartwell?”

Lucas nodded.

“My family owns part of it.”

“Of course they do.”

She forwarded the information to Helena.

Then Lucas said.

“I’m sorry.”

Willow did not look at him.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“The slap?”

“Yes.”

“The lies?”

“Yes.”

“Watching me before we met?”

His voice cracked.

“Yes.”

She finally faced him.

“Did you ever love me?”

Lucas’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“That’s the tragedy.”

Willow’s voice remained calm.

“I think you did.”

Lucas looked confused.

She continued.

“And it still wasn’t enough to make you choose me when it mattered.”

He looked down.

“My father controlled everything.”

“No.”

“You allowed him to.”

Lucas stepped closer.

“I can help you stop him.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because he just disinherited me.”

Willow smiled sadly.

“And there it is.”

“What?”

“You’re not helping because you suddenly understand what he did to me.”

“You’re helping because he finally did it to you.”

Lucas flinched.

Then Willow noticed something on the kitchen counter.

A folder.

Her name.

She walked toward it.

Lucas moved too quickly.

“Willow.”

She grabbed it.

Inside were photographs.

Her leaving the gallery.

Visiting Michael.

Meeting Helena.

Medical records.

Therapy appointments.

Bank statements.

Everything Lucas had spent years collecting.

Willow stared at him.

“You said this was your father.”

Lucas said nothing.

Her hands started shaking.

“You kept the file.”

“I had to.”

“For what?”

Lucas looked broken.

“In case you found out.”

The betrayal landed deeper than any answer before it.

Willow whispered.

“So you always knew there was something to find.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“What exactly?”

Before he could answer, Willow saw a final document inside the folder.

A signed agreement dated six years earlier.

Before they met.

Lucas Sterling would receive fifteen million dollars from Richard Sterling upon marriage to Willow Donovan.

Willow looked up.

Lucas had gone pale.

May you like

Her marriage had not merely been arranged.

It had been purchased.
