Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Michael sat down heavily.
“The building is mine.”
“That isn’t what Lucas said.”
“The land isn’t.”
Willow stared.
“Explain.”
Michael rubbed both hands over his face.
“After Kathryn died, business got bad.”
“I was behind on everything.”
“A company offered to purchase the land and lease it back to me.”
“What company?”
Michael looked ashamed.
“Lakeview Property Holdings.”
Helena immediately pulled out her phone.
Willow already knew.
“Sterling.”
Michael nodded.
“When did you find out?”
“Two years later.”
“And you stayed?”
“I had employees.”
“Dad.”
“I had twelve families depending on this place.”
Willow turned away.
She felt trapped inside a maze built long before she knew she was walking through it.
“Did Richard threaten you?”
“Not directly.”
“That means yes.”
“He reminded me that leases can end.”
“And what did he want?”
Michael looked at the safe.
“The evidence.”
Willow’s breath caught.
“You gave him some of it.”
“I gave him copies.”
“Why?”
“To make him believe I had surrendered.”
Michael opened another drawer and removed a flash drive.
“I kept everything.”
Helena stared at him.
“That is either incredibly smart or incredibly dangerous.”
“Both.”
Willow sat again.
“Why didn’t Richard simply destroy you?”
Michael looked at her.
“Because of you.”
She frowned.
“He didn’t know how much Evelyn had told me about your birth.”
“So he kept you close.”
“He kept me controlled.”
Willow thought of every family gathering Richard had skipped because Michael would be present.
Every time Lucas insisted they visit Willow’s father separately.
Every time Marion commented that Michael made Richard “uncomfortable.”
It had never been class prejudice alone.
It had been fear.
Helena’s phone suddenly buzzed.
She looked at it.
Then looked at Willow.
“What?”
Helena turned the screen around.
A video clip from the anniversary party was already online.
It began two seconds after the slap.
Willow stood holding her cheek.
Lucas stood in front of her.
The actual strike was missing.
The caption read.
STERLING HEIRESS CAUSES DRUNKEN MELTDOWN AT ANNIVERSARY GALA.
Willow stared.
“That was fast.”
Helena scrolled.
“Three outlets have it.”
“Who posted it?”
“Anonymous account.”
Michael shook his head.
“Richard.”
Willow watched the clip again.
Lucas appeared calm.
Willow looked stunned.
Without the slap, the context disappeared.
Then another video appeared.
This one showed Willow arguing with Richard.
It began exactly after Richard insulted her father.
Her response remained.
His provocation did not.
She looked aggressive.
He looked elderly and composed.
“They’re editing the night.”
Helena nodded.
“And they’re doing it fast.”
Willow’s phone filled with notifications.
Friends.
Reporters.
Gallery clients.
Board members.
A headline appeared.
STERLING ANNIVERSARY ENDS AFTER WIFE’S PUBLIC OUTBURST.
Willow felt panic rising.
Michael took the phone from her.
“Don’t read it.”
“They’re changing what happened.”
“Then we prove what happened.”
“How?”
Michael looked toward the ceiling.
“This place has cameras.”
Willow frowned.
“So?”
Michael stood.
“Richard visited me four nights ago.”
Silence fell.
“What?”
“He came here alone.”
“Why?”
“He asked about Nathaniel.”
Willow’s heartbeat quickened.
Michael walked toward the computer in the corner.
“The security system recorded the entire conversation.”
He opened a folder.
One video file appeared.
Before he could click it, headlights flashed through the shop windows.
A black SUV stopped outside.
Then another.
Michael’s face changed.
“Kill the lights.”
Helena reached for Willow’s arm.
Three men in dark suits stepped from the vehicles.
One walked toward the front door.
He held up a document.
“Michael Donovan?”
Michael did not answer.
The man shouted through the glass.
“We represent Lakeview Property Holdings.”
He taped the document to the door.
“Your lease has been terminated effective immediately.”
Michael stared at the paper.
Then Willow saw something beneath the legal notice.
A handwritten message.

One sentence.
Bring me Evelyn’s tape, or lose more than the shop.
