Chapter 2 - THE NAME HE NEVER ASKED ABOUT

Escalante Global occupied the top twelve floors of a glass tower in Manhattan.
Andrew had driven past the building hundreds of times.
He had attended charity dinners sponsored by the company.
He had shaken hands with executives whose salaries exceeded the annual revenue of some corporations.
And not once had he realized the woman sleeping beside him every night belonged to the family that controlled it.
That morning, I sat across from my father.
Alejandro Escalante had built nothing from luck.
He had spent forty years turning a regional logistics company into an international network of real estate, shipping, energy, private equity, and infrastructure investments.
People usually changed their posture when he entered a room.
I never did.
To me, he was still the father who made pancakes badly and insisted they were perfect.
He studied the bruise on my cheek.
His expression did not change.
That made him more frightening.
“Twice?” he asked.
I nodded.
His hand tightened around a silver pen.
“And you waited until last night to tell me what your marriage had become.”
“I thought I could fix it.”
“You spent four years fixing everyone except yourself.”
I looked down.
That hurt because it was true.
My father slid a document toward me.
“Whitmore Capital currently owes Escalante-controlled entities three hundred and eighty-seven million dollars.”
I looked at the number.
I already knew most of it.
But seeing it in one place felt different.
“And the mansion?”
“Held as collateral.”
“The cars?”
“Corporate assets.”
“The private aircraft?”
“Leased through one of our subsidiaries.”
I almost laughed.
For years, Margaret had spoken about “Whitmore wealth” as though it were a dynasty built over generations.
The truth was uglier.
They had been living inside a palace secured by my family’s money.
My father leaned back.
“What do you want?”
I knew what he was asking.
He could destroy Andrew in a day.
Maybe in an hour.
But destruction without truth would allow Andrew to tell everyone I had simply used my father’s power to punish him.
I wanted something else.
“I want an audit.”
My father watched me carefully.
“Full forensic?”
“Yes.”
“Every company?”
“Every subsidiary.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You think there’s more than infidelity.”
“I know Andrew.”
I looked through the windows at the city below.
“When he feels cornered, he cheats.”
“With women?”
“With everything.”
My father gave a single nod.
The chief legal officer entered.
She placed a folder before me.
“We found something already.”
Inside was a transfer of eight million dollars.
Whitmore Capital had moved the money three months earlier.
The recipient was a consulting company called BRC Holdings.
I had never heard of it.
“Who owns BRC?” I asked.
The lawyer turned one page.
My stomach tightened.
Brenda Collins.
Andrew’s mistress.
Eight million dollars.
Transferred from a company I had saved.
Into the hands of the woman who had watched him slap me.
But the lawyer was not finished.
“There are seventeen more payments.”
I looked up.
“How much?”
She answered quietly.
“Thirty-four million dollars total.”
That was the moment the marriage stopped being my biggest problem.
May you like
Because Andrew had not only betrayed me.
He had been stealing from the empire that kept him alive.
