Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE DIAMONDS

I did not look back when Nathan called my name.
I walked through the glass doors of the jewelry store with my cheek burning and my hands strangely steady.
Behind me, I heard Celeste say something under her breath.
Then Nathan shouted again.
“Emma, wait.”
I kept walking.
The moment I reached the sidewalk, a black sedan pulled away from the curb across the street.
I noticed it because the rear window lowered for half a second.
Someone inside was watching me.
Then the car disappeared into traffic.
My attorney, Maya Bennett, was waiting inside a coffee shop two blocks away.
She stood the second I entered.
Her expression changed when she saw my face.
“He did it.”
I nodded.
“Twice.”
Maya’s jaw tightened.
“Did you react?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten him?”
“Only with the truth.”
I slid into the booth.
“My lawyer will take half your shares tomorrow.”
For the first time that day, I almost smiled.
Maya opened her laptop.
“That line may have saved us.”
Three days earlier, Maya had discovered that a transfer agreement had been filed with the corporate records office.
According to the document, I had voluntarily transferred twenty-two percent of Carlisle Crown Holdings to my husband.
The signature looked like mine.
The date made sense.
The notary seal was legitimate.
There was only one problem.
On the day I supposedly signed it, I had been in Boston undergoing surgery.
Hospital records placed me six hundred miles away.
Nathan had underestimated me.
But whoever helped him had not.
The document had been prepared carefully enough to survive a normal corporate review.
That frightened Maya more than the forgery itself.
“We need the store footage before he deletes it.”
“He will.”
“He’ll try.”
Maya turned the laptop toward me.
Nathan’s flagship store used a security company called Meridian Shield.
The cameras did not simply save footage to a recorder inside the building.
They uploaded encrypted copies to an outside compliance server because the store insured more than forty million dollars in inventory.
Nathan could erase his local system.
He could not easily erase theirs.
Maya had already prepared an emergency preservation request.
I looked at her.
“You knew he might hit me.”
“No.”
Her eyes hardened.
“I knew he might reveal what kind of man he really was.”
There was a difference.
And I understood it.
The plan had been simple.
Go to the store.
Return the ring.
Force Nathan to believe I was emotionally defeated.
Watch what he did.
Watch what Celeste did.
Most importantly, see whether either of them tried to access the private office after I mentioned the shares.
We needed to know whether the store contained something more valuable than diamonds.
At 7:43 that evening, Maya’s phone rang.
She answered.
She listened for less than thirty seconds.
Then she slowly looked at me.
“What?”
“The preservation request went through.”
“And?”
“The security company confirmed there were twelve active cameras in the store when Nathan hit you.”
I exhaled.
Maya was still staring at the phone.
“That isn’t why they called.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did they find?”
“One of the cameras is inside Nathan’s private office.”
I leaned closer.
Maya swallowed.
“Emma, eighteen minutes after you left, Nathan and Celeste entered that office.”
She turned the phone around.
A still image appeared on the screen.
Nathan stood beside his desk.
Celeste was kneeling in front of an open floor safe.
And between them was a man wearing a charcoal coat.
His back faced the camera.
I could not see his face.
But I recognized the gold walking cane in his right hand.
I had seen that cane at every Christmas dinner since childhood.
It belonged to Malcolm Pierce.
My mother’s oldest friend.
My godfather.
And the trustee who had controlled my inheritance since I was seventeen.
For the first time that night, I stopped thinking about Nathan.
Because Malcolm was never supposed to know I had discovered the forged transfer.
May you like
Yet somehow, eighteen minutes after I left the jewelry store, he was standing beside the safe.
And whatever Nathan had stolen from me was apparently important enough to bring Malcolm there personally.
