Chapter 14 - CELESTE BETRAYS US

The board meeting began at two.

I entered with Maya and my father.

Every conversation stopped.

Malcolm was already seated.

When he saw Thomas Carlisle, the blood drained from his face.

For twelve years, he had built power around a dead man.

Now the dead man took a seat across from him.

Robert joined by video.

Pelham’s attorneys occupied one side of the room.

Nathan arrived alone.

Celeste was missing.

That frightened me more than Malcolm.

At 1:48, she had texted Maya.

I HAVE THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.

COMING NOW.

She never arrived.

The meeting began.

Malcolm challenged my father’s identity.

My father produced medical records, fingerprints, and DNA comparisons.

Malcolm demanded independent testing.

Maya submitted the founder’s letter.

Malcolm called it unauthenticated.

Then Robert made the motion.

Approve the Pelham merger.

My heart pounded.

We needed one more piece.

Something strong enough to suspend Malcolm immediately.

The original recording.

Celeste.

At 2:17, the conference room doors opened.

Celeste entered.

Relief lasted two seconds.

Then I saw who walked behind her.

Malcolm’s private attorney.

Celeste refused to look at me.

She walked directly to Malcolm’s side.

He smiled.

My stomach turned.

“You promised.”

I said.

Celeste’s eyes finally met mine.

“I’m sorry.”

She placed a small recorder on the table.

Malcolm covered it with his hand.

Nathan stood.

“What are you doing?”

“Sit down.”

Malcolm said.

Nathan did not.

“You’re giving him the recording?”

Celeste looked at him.

“Yes.”

For the first time, Nathan looked genuinely devastated by her.

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Malcolm addressed the board.

“Now that this distraction is resolved, I suggest we vote.”

Maya leaned toward me.

“We may need to seek another injunction.”

“It will be too late.”

“I know.”

The vote began.

Malcolm’s block supported the merger.

Robert supported it.

Pelham exercised Robert’s option.

Two directors voted yes.

One voted no.

Nathan had no valid shares.

Everything came down to the temporary proxy Peter had tricked me into signing.

Malcolm voted it.

The secretary began calculating.

Then Celeste stood.

“Before the result is announced, I need to correct something.”

Malcolm turned.

“What?”

“The recorder I gave you is empty.”

His expression changed.

Celeste removed a second device from her jacket.

“This one isn’t.”

Malcolm stood.

“You stupid woman.”

Celeste’s voice shook.

“Yes.”

“I was stupid for twelve years.”

She placed the real recorder in front of Maya.

“But I’m finished.”

The room exploded into arguments.

Then federal agents entered.

Peter Lang had given them enough to obtain warrants.

They approached Malcolm.

Robert’s video feed suddenly disappeared.

Malcolm did not look afraid.

He looked at me.

Then he smiled.

“You still think this meeting matters.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?”

He adjusted his cuff.

“The merger was never the final move.”

Maya grabbed the transaction file.

Malcolm’s smile widened.

“At 9:00 this morning, Pelham exercised the mineral rights option.”

My father stood.

“They can’t.”

“They can if the company is declared financially distressed.”

I stared at Malcolm.

“We aren’t distressed.”

He smiled again.

“You will be by five.”

Then Maya received an alert.

Carlisle Crown’s primary operating account had just been frozen.

May you like

Someone had triggered loan covenants tied to a debt agreement I had never seen.

And suddenly every employee, every store, and every factory my family owned was hours away from losing access to cash.
