Chapter 1 – The Morning the Empire Stopped

At exactly 6:00 a.m., the executive floor of Hawthorne Global came to a standstill.

Andrew Hawthorne stepped out of the elevator with his usual confidence, Brenda proudly walking beside him as though she already belonged there.

Something immediately felt wrong.

No one greeted him.

The receptionists avoided eye contact.

Security officers, who normally saluted him every morning, simply stood in silence.

Andrew frowned.

"What is going on?"

Before anyone answered, every monitor in the lobby suddenly flashed red.

ACCESS REVOKED.

His executive identification card had been disabled.

"What kind of joke is this?" Andrew snapped.

The Head of Corporate Security approached with two attorneys.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Hawthorne."

"By unanimous vote of the controlling shareholders, you have been suspended as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately."

Andrew laughed.

"I own fifty-one percent of this company."

One attorney calmly slid a leather folder across the marble reception desk.

"You believed you did."

Inside was a stack of legal documents bearing Mariana Escalante's signature.

Years earlier, when Hawthorne Global had been on the edge of bankruptcy, Mariana had quietly rescued it through the Escalante Family Investment Trust.

Every rescue loan contained a hidden protective clause.

If Andrew committed financial misconduct, domestic abuse, or actions that damaged the company's public reputation, voting control would automatically transfer back to the trust.

Last night's assault had been recorded by the mansion's security system.

The footage was already in the hands of the board.

Andrew's face slowly lost all color.

"This... this isn't possible."

"It became possible," one director replied, "the moment you raised your hand against the woman who saved this company."
