Chapter 10 - CHARLES MAKES AN OFFER

Charles Caldwell requested a private meeting with me.
I refused.
Then he requested one through his attorney.
Dana refused for me.
Then he sent an offer.
Five million dollars.
All I had to do was settle the civil claims, decline further interviews, and state publicly that the dinner incident had been exaggerated by “outside parties.”
I stared at the number.
Five million dollars.
There had been a time in my life when seeing that number on a page would have taken my breath away.
Now it made me furious.
“They still think this is about money.”
Dana folded the letter.
“For Charles, everything is about money.”
“What happens if I accept?”
“You become very wealthy.”
“And Maya?”
“Still has her case.”
“Rebecca?”
“Still dead.”
“My condo?”
“Still yours.”
I shook my head.
“Then nothing important changes.”
Dana smiled faintly.
“I assumed you would say that.”
We rejected the offer.
The next one arrived less than twenty-four hours later.
Eight million.
Then ten.
Charles had finally discovered a word he could not buy.
No.
That evening, someone leaked a photograph of me leaving the hospital.
A gossip website described me as “the estranged wife threatening one of Napa’s most influential families.”
The article mentioned my income.
My condo value.
My pending divorce.
Then it quoted an anonymous Caldwell relative.
“Claire has always been obsessed with money.”
I read that sentence three times.
Then I sent the article to Ruiz.
“Good.”
She surprised me.
“Good?”
“People make mistakes when they try to control a public narrative.”
The mistake appeared the following morning.
The website published a second article containing details from my private employment complaint.
Details never made public.
Details known only to my employer, Adrian, and whoever had created the anonymous accusation.
Dana issued subpoenas.
The website resisted.
Then the editor discovered the source had lied about their identity.
The information had been provided through a public-relations consultant.
That consultant worked for Caldwell Vineyards.
The payment had been authorized by Charles.
More importantly, the consultant’s files contained something else.
A draft media plan prepared before the family dinner.
The title was simple.
CLAIRE BENNETT RESPONSE STRATEGY.
My hands trembled while I read it.
If Claire refused proposed family housing arrangement, portray disagreement as marital issue.
If Claire threatened legal action, emphasize stress and emotional instability.
If Claire contacted police, prepare statements emphasizing accident.
The document had been created eleven days before Adrian struck me.
Eleven days.
They had prepared their explanation before the violence occurred.
Dana looked at me across the table.
“This changes things.”
“They expected him to hit me?”
“We can’t prove that.”
“But they expected something.”
“Yes.”
She pointed toward the document.
“They anticipated that police might become involved.”
I remembered the faces around the table after the plate shattered.
No surprise.
No urgency.
Just silence.
Maybe they had not known exactly what Adrian would do.
But they had known intimidation was part of the plan.
And they had already decided how to explain it.
For the first time, the dinner felt even colder in memory.
May you like
Because spontaneous cruelty is terrifying.
Prepared cruelty is something else entirely.
