Chapter 16 - ELEANOR SPEAKS

Eleanor testified under an agreement with prosecutors.

She admitted destroying evidence.

She admitted helping Charles conceal financial crimes.

She admitted lying about the marina.

Then she explained why.

“I was afraid of him.”

Charles laughed quietly from the defense table.

Eleanor looked toward him.

“For forty-three years.”

The courtroom remained silent.

She described their marriage.

At first, Charles controlled business decisions.

Then money.

Then family.

Eventually, he treated every person around him as an asset or liability.

Eleanor did not portray herself as innocent.

That mattered.

“I helped him.”

Her voice shook.

“I told myself I was protecting our children.”

She looked at Adrian.

“I was teaching them to become him.”

The prosecutor asked about women marrying into the family.

Eleanor admitted creating the notes found in the basement.

“What was the purpose?”

“To know what they cared about.”

“Why?”

“So Charles knew what leverage existed.”

“And Claire Bennett?”

Eleanor looked toward me.

“She owned property Adrian wanted kept within the family.”

“Did Claire ever agree?”

“No.”

“Did you know a deed was being prepared?”

“Yes.”

“Did you expect her to resist?”

“Yes.”

“What was supposed to happen if she refused?”

Eleanor began crying.

“Pressure.”

“What kind?”

“Adrian was supposed to convince her.”

“Did you anticipate violence?”

“No.”

The prosecutor paused.

“But your public-relations team prepared a statement for possible police involvement.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles said Adrian had his father’s temper.”

The courtroom shifted.

Adrian stared at his mother.

The prosecutor moved to Rebecca.

“What happened at the marina?”

Eleanor’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Rebecca refused to surrender the bag.”

“Did Charles touch her?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He grabbed her arm.”

“What happened next?”

“She pulled away.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“She slipped near the edge.”

“Did Charles push her?”

“I don’t know.”

Charles shook his head.

Eleanor saw him.

Something changed in her face.

Then she added.

“But I know what happened after she fell.”

The prosecutor waited.

“She surfaced.”

Maya gasped beside me.

Eleanor continued.

“Rebecca was alive.”

“Did Charles help her?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“I tried.”

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“He grabbed me.”

“What did he say?”

“He said if we helped her, she would destroy the family.”

The prosecutor stepped closer.

“What happened to Rebecca?”

“She disappeared beneath the water.”

“While you watched?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor began sobbing.

“Yes.”

The truth was worse than a sudden accident.

Rebecca had surfaced.

She had been reachable.

Charles had chosen the empire.

Eleanor had chosen obedience.

And Rebecca had paid for both choices.

The prosecutor asked one final question.

“Mrs. Caldwell, why are you telling the truth now?”

Eleanor looked directly at me.

“Because Claire did what none of us did.”

May you like

I held her gaze.

“She called for help.”
