Chapter 17 - ADRIAN’S LAST OFFER

Adrian was arrested before he reached the bank lobby exit.

Inside his jacket, police found the missing C.B. packet.

It stood for Charles Bennett.

My father.

For several seconds, I thought someone had made a mistake.

“My father’s name is Charles Bennett.”

Ruiz nodded.

“I know.”

“He lives in Florida.”

“Yes.”

“He has never had anything to do with the Caldwells.”

Ruiz said nothing.

My stomach dropped.

“Has he?”

The answer arrived from my father himself.

I called him.

He was silent for so long that I thought the connection had failed.

“Dad.”

“I’m here.”

“What is this?”

Another silence.

Then he exhaled.

“Before you were born, I worked for Pacific Heritage Bank.”

I sat down.

“What?”

“I was a junior commercial lender.”

My father had always told me he worked in finance before moving into insurance.

He had never mentioned the bank.

“The Caldwells were clients.”

The room seemed to narrow around me.

“What did you do?”

“I refused a loan.”

His voice shook.

“Charles wanted financing against assets I didn’t believe belonged to him.”

“What happened?”

“My supervisor approved it anyway.”

“Then?”

“I copied the file.”

The C.B. packet contained correspondence proving my father had reported suspicious Caldwell transactions internally in 1994.

He had been threatened with termination.

He resigned.

Moved away.

Married my mother.

Built another life.

“What does this have to do with me?”

“I don’t know how they connected you to me.”

But I did.

My name.

My career.

Public property records.

Adrian’s family could have found the connection after we started dating.

Maybe the relationship began naturally.

Maybe it didn’t.

That question hurt more than I wanted to admit.

Adrian requested to speak with me through attorneys.

Rachel refused.

Then he made an offer.

Full cooperation.

Complete divorce settlement.

Testimony against Charles and Eleanor.

In exchange, he wanted me to issue a statement saying our marriage had once been genuine.

I stared at Rachel.

“Why?”

“Because he knows what the public believes.”

“What does he believe?”

“That you can save the part of him he still wants people to respect.”

I laughed.

“He hit me with a plate.”

“I know.”

“He forged my name.”

“I know.”

“He helped his family investigate me.”

“I know.”

“And now he wants me to certify that there was love underneath it?”

Rachel closed the offer.

“What do you want to do?”

“Nothing.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“I don’t negotiate his conscience.”

That afternoon, prosecutors charged Charles and Eleanor with multiple counts connected to fraud, conspiracy, forgery, and witness intimidation.

They were still missing.

Adrian remained in custody.

Before being transferred, he gave detectives one piece of information.

“My parents aren’t running.”

Ruiz asked where they were.

Adrian smiled bitterly.

“They’re cleaning.”

“Cleaning what?”

“The first place.”

“What first place?”

His answer brought investigators back to Napa.

Not to the vineyard.

May you like

To an abandoned house fifteen miles away.

The house where Eleanor Caldwell grew up.
