Chapter 20 - THE NAME BEFORE ADRIAN

Three weeks after Adrian’s sentencing, a package arrived at my office.

No sender.

No return address.

Just my name.

Claire Bennett.

Ellen watched me turn it over.

“Do you want security?”

I almost said no.

Then I remembered what I had learned.

“Yes.”

We opened it inside a conference room with a security officer present.

There was no threat inside.

No photograph of my building.

No warning.

Only an old envelope.

And a letter.

The paper had yellowed.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

CLAIRE,

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THE CALDWELL RECORDS HAVE FINALLY BECOME PUBLIC.

My breathing stopped.

I continued.

YOUR FATHER WAS NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO TRIED TO STOP THEM.

THERE WERE FOUR OF US.

TWO BACKED DOWN.

ONE DIED.

YOUR FATHER LEFT CALIFORNIA.

I KEPT WATCHING.

I looked at Ellen.

“Call Ruiz.”

Then I continued reading.

CHARLES CALDWELL BELIEVED THE MISSING MISSION BAY RECORDS WERE DESTROYED UNTIL 2018.

2018.

The year Adrian proposed to me.

That couldn’t be coincidence.

WHEN HE DISCOVERED WHO OWNED UNIT 1807, HE ALSO DISCOVERED WHO YOUR FATHER WAS.

I gripped the table.

ADRIAN DID NOT MEET YOU BY ACCIDENT.

For several seconds, the letters blurred.

I forced myself to continue.

HE WAS INTRODUCED TO YOU.

HE WAS TOLD TO GET CLOSE TO YOU.

THE ORIGINAL PURPOSE WAS TO FIND OUT WHAT YOUR FATHER HAD GIVEN YOU.

My chest tightened until breathing became difficult.

My father had always claimed he knew nothing about Adrian.

Maybe he hadn’t.

Maybe the Caldwells had known everything.

The next paragraph was worse.

BUT SOMETHING CHANGED AFTER ADRIAN MARRIED YOU.

CHARLES BEGAN KEEPING A SECOND FILE.

ONE ADRIAN WAS NEVER ALLOWED TO SEE.

I looked inside the envelope.

There was a photograph.

It showed Charles leaving a restaurant.

Beside him stood a man in a navy suit.

The photograph had been taken six months before the Napa dinner.

I didn’t recognize the man.

Ruiz arrived forty minutes later.

She stared at the photograph.

Then her expression changed.

“You know him?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

“Detective?”

Ruiz placed the photograph on the table.

“I know the name.”

“Who is he?”

“A federal investigator.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why was Charles meeting a federal investigator?”

“That’s a very good question.”

I returned to the letter.

There were only four lines remaining.

THE CALDWELLS DID NOT SURVIVE FOR THIRTY YEARS ONLY BECAUSE THEY HAD MONEY.

THEY SURVIVED BECAUSE SOMEONE ALWAYS WARNED THEM.

THE PERSON WHO WARNED THEM IS STILL FREE.

AND CLAIRE—

HE KNOWS YOU FOUND THE RECORDS.

The conference room became completely silent.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

I opened it.

No words.

Only a photograph.

Taken through the conference-room window less than one minute earlier.

It showed me standing beside Detective Ruiz.

Someone was watching us.

Ellen whispered.

“Oh my God.”

Ruiz immediately moved toward the window.

Security locked the doors.

I stared at the photograph on my phone.

Eleven months earlier, twenty people had watched Adrian strike me and assumed silence would protect their family.

They had been wrong.

Now someone else had made the same mistake.

They believed a photograph would frighten me.

They believed I would see the warning and retreat.

They still didn’t understand.

I had already survived the plate.

The lies.

The forged signatures.

The threats.

The family.

I picked up my phone.

Then I looked at Ruiz.

“Find out who sent this.”

She nodded.

I turned toward the window.

Somewhere beyond the glass, someone believed the Caldwell story had ended with a courtroom.

I knew better now.

The basement had exposed the family.

But it had also exposed something underneath them.

Something older.

Something larger.

May you like

And this time, nobody was going to convince me to look away.
