Chapter 1 — The Name They Never Asked About

The room fell silent.
Nurse Emily stared at Claire's chart, then quickly picked up the bedside phone.
"I'll make the call."
Adrian stepped between her and the door.
"You're not calling anyone."
The nurse met his eyes without flinching.
"Hospital policy gives every patient the right to contact their emergency representative."
She dialed.
Three rings.
A calm, older voice answered.
"This is Richard Whitmore."
Nurse Emily swallowed.
"Sir... your daughter, Claire Whitmore, asked me to tell you she needs you immediately."
There was no question.
No confusion.
Only one sentence.
"Keep my daughter safe."
The line went dead.
Exactly twelve minutes later, every elevator in the maternity wing stopped accepting outside visitors.
Hospital administrators appeared from nowhere.
Security officers quietly surrounded the hallway—not to remove Claire, but to protect her room.
Adrian frowned.
"What is this?"
Before anyone answered, the hospital director hurried into the room.
His face had gone pale.
He looked directly at Claire.
"Miss Whitmore..."
He corrected himself.
"Mrs. Whitmore... your father is on his way."
Then he turned toward Adrian.
"I'm afraid you and your guests must remain here until legal counsel arrives."
Adrian laughed.
"You can't possibly know who you're talking to."
The director answered calmly.
May you like
"I know exactly who I'm talking to."
"And I know exactly who her father is."
