Chapter 2 — The Man Who Walked In Without Raising His Voice

Forty minutes later...

The hallway became unnaturally quiet.

Doctors stopped talking.

Nurses stood straighter.

Even hospital executives gathered near the entrance.

A black sedan pulled beneath the emergency entrance.

Then another.

And another.

No flashing lights.

No sirens.

Only quiet authority.

Richard Whitmore stepped inside wearing a dark navy overcoat.

Silver hair.

Calm blue eyes.

No bodyguards walking beside him.

They walked behind him.

His reputation arrived first.

Chairman of Whitmore Capital.

Owner of one of the nation's largest healthcare investment groups.

Major shareholder of the hospital where his daughter had just given birth.

He entered Claire's room.

His eyes immediately found her bruised face.

Then the empty arms where his granddaughter should have been.

For several seconds...

He simply looked at her.

"I'm sorry," Claire whispered.

"I thought he'd love me."

Richard gently kissed her forehead.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Then he turned toward Adrian.

His voice remained almost gentle.

"Give me my granddaughter."

Vanessa tightened her grip on Lily.

"No."

Richard nodded once.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

He looked toward the hospital director.

"Begin."

Within seconds, hospital legal counsel entered with uniformed police officers and representatives from Child Protective Services.

Adrian's confident smile disappeared.
