Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF A LIE

I ran toward the observatory.

Victor caught me.

“No.”

“That was Grant.”

“We don’t know that.”

Another gunshot.

My entire body reacted.

I hated Grant.

I had ended our marriage in my mind hours ago.

But he was still Ellie’s father.

He was still the man she would ask for tomorrow.

I could not let her lose him because of a mistake I allowed.

Maren grabbed my arm.

“Timer.”

BLUEBIRD REASSIGNMENT: 03:48.

My mother whispered.

“If it completes, Ellie is removed as primary.”

“And Mara becomes the target.”

Maren looked at me.

“Better.”

“No.”

I stared at my sister.

“Not better.”

“Different.”

I turned toward Victor.

“Can your team breach?”

“Yes.”

“Do it.”

The tactical team moved.

Two officers reached the lower entrance.

Explosive charge.

Three.

Two.

One.

The door blew inward.

We entered behind them.

Smoke filled the lower corridor.

One of Michael’s men lay unconscious.

Another surrendered.

We reached the telescope chamber.

Grant was on his knees.

Blood covered the side of his shirt.

My heart stopped.

Michael Reeves stood behind him.

A pistol pressed against Grant’s shoulder.

My father was tied to a chair near the console.

He had blood on his face.

Michael looked almost nothing like the photographs.

Older.

Lean.

Silver-haired.

But Grant’s eyes were his.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

Michael smiled at me.

“My daughter-in-law.”

I hated the word.

“Let him go.”

Grant looked at me.

“I’m fine.”

He was lying.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Michael laughed.

“He always did lie beautifully.”

Grant turned slightly.

“Runs in the family.”

Michael struck him across the head.

I moved.

Victor stopped me.

Michael raised the gun.

“Real key.”

I took the chip from my pocket.

Everyone froze.

Grant shook his head.

“No.”

Michael smiled.

“Finally.”

I held it up.

“Release both of them.”

“No.”

“Then no key.”

“Mara.”

His voice became almost affectionate.

“You are exactly like Evelyn.”

“Thank you.”

My mother laughed once behind me.

Michael’s smile disappeared.

“You have no idea what your mother did.”

“I know enough.”

“She killed me.”

“Apparently badly.”

Victor almost smiled.

Michael’s face hardened.

“Give me the key.”

The Bluebird timer reached 01:42.

My father shouted.

“Let it finish.”

Michael aimed the gun at him.

“Quiet.”

Henry smiled through blood.

“You were always afraid of women.”

Michael shot him.

The sound exploded.

I screamed.

My father jerked sideways.

The bullet struck his leg.

He remained conscious.

“Dad.”

Michael looked at me.

“Next one higher.”

Grant lunged.

Michael fired.

Grant crashed into him.

The gun skidded across the floor.

Victor’s team moved.

Michael pulled a knife.

Grant grabbed his wrist.

They fell against the console.

The timer reached 00:49.

My mother shouted.

“Do not let Michael touch the reader.”

Michael slammed Grant into the table.

Grant fell.

Michael reached for the biometric plate.

I ran.

I hit him with everything I had.

We both fell.

Michael stared at me.

For one second, I saw surprise.

Then hatred.

“You.”

He grabbed my throat.

Grant tackled him from the side.

Maren joined us.

Victor pulled Michael away.

Security restrained him.

The timer reached 00:10.

My mother screamed.

“Move.”

Everyone turned toward the console.

00:09.

00:08.

Ellie was outside.

Safe.

I thought of her.

00:07.

Grant crawled toward me.

00:06.

My father shouted.

“Let it happen.”

00:05.

Maren grabbed my hand.

00:04.

My mother looked at us.

00:03.

Michael screamed.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

00:02.

Grant whispered.

“Do it.”

00:01.

The screen went white.

Then blue.

PRIMARY BLUEBIRD BENEFICIARY REASSIGNED.

MARA KINGSLEY.

I exhaled.

Then a second message appeared.

GUARDIAN PROXY TERMINATED.

Grant stared.

“What does that mean?”

My mother smiled weakly.

“Ellie is free.”

For the first time all night, I felt something like relief.

Then the screen changed again.

DORMANT NETWORK ACTIVATION: COMPLETE.

Victor froze.

“No.”

My father shouted.

“Shut it down.”

Evelyn stared.

“It shouldn’t activate.”

Michael began laughing.

Everyone turned.

He was restrained on the floor.

Bleeding.

Smiling.

“What did you do?”

He looked at Grant.

“Wrong key.”

Grant frowned.

Michael laughed harder.

“The real Reeves authorization was never in the watch.”

My stomach dropped.

Grant stared.

“Then what was it?”

“A trigger.”

Victor looked at the screen.

“The chip activated the network.”

“Yes.”

My mother went pale.

Michael continued.

“Thomas hid the true Reeves key.”

Grant’s voice became low.

“Where?”

Michael smiled.

“You already have it.”

Grant stared.

“What?”

Michael looked toward Ellie’s direction outside.

My blood turned to ice.

“No.”

He smiled.

“Her birth certificate.”

My father whispered.

“That’s impossible.”

Michael laughed.

“Grant named her Ellie Mercer.”

“So?”

“Her legal registration created the final Reeves descendant authentication.”

Grant went pale.

Michael continued.

“Bluebird was waiting for a child.”

“A Kingsley daughter carrying Reeves blood.”

My mother stared.

“You planned this for decades.”

Michael smiled.

“I waited for biology to do the work.”

I felt sick.

Grant looked ready to kill him.

Victor held him back.

The screen began listing accounts.

Zurich.

Singapore.

Cayman Islands.

London.

New York.

Billions moving.

My father shouted.

“Freeze external transfers.”

Victor typed.

Access denied.

Evelyn tried.

Denied.

Maren tried.

Denied.

I placed my hand on the reader.

The screen changed.

WELCOME, MARA KINGSLEY.

I froze.

A new message appeared.

YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO CHOOSE.

OPTION ONE: RELEASE BLUEBIRD LEDGER.

OPTION TWO: PRESERVE KINGSL EY HOLDINGS.

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

My father closed his eyes.

He knew.

“Dad.”

He looked at me.

“The system was designed to force the final beneficiary to choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Truth.”

He swallowed.

“Or the empire.”

Silence.

I looked around.

If I released the ledger, every name became public.

Governments could collapse.

Families could be destroyed.

Crimes would be exposed.

Kingsley Holdings might survive.

If I preserved the empire, the ledger vanished.

The evidence died.

The guilty remained protected.

Exactly the kind of choice my family had made for generations.

Michael smiled from the floor.

“Now you understand.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Power is not money.”

His eyes gleamed.

“Power is deciding which truth survives.”

I looked at my daughter through the open doorway.

Ellie was holding Rebecca’s hand.

Three years old.

Innocent.

Already used by everyone.

I knew what my family expected me to choose.

What Grant would once have chosen.

What my father had chosen for years.

Protect the empire.

Protect the name.

Protect stability.

Bury the dead.

I touched the screen.

Victor whispered.

“Mara.”

Grant looked at me.

“What are you doing?”

I selected OPTION ONE.

RELEASE BLUEBIRD LEDGER.

My father shouted.

“No.”

Michael stopped laughing.

My mother closed her eyes.

Grant stared at me.

I pressed CONFIRM.

The screen asked.

FINAL AUTHORIZATION?

I whispered.

“Yes.”

Then the entire Bluebird system went dark.

May you like

And every phone in the room began ringing at once.
