Chapter 14 - I CHOSE THE TRUTH

By sunrise, the first government investigations had begun.
The Bluebird ledger did not dump everything publicly.
My father had designed one final ethical barrier.
The records were distributed to twelve independent legal authorities.
Federal prosecutors.
International financial regulators.
Two investigative courts.
Three independent auditors.
And a sealed judicial review panel.
Victor stared at the distribution list.
“Henry.”
My father sat on the floor while a medic bandaged his leg.
He looked exhausted.
“I wanted Mara to believe the choice was absolute.”
I turned toward him.
“You manipulated me again.”
“Yes.”
“You made me think exposing the truth would destroy innocent people.”
“It still may.”
“But you knew the data would go to investigators first.”
“Yes.”
I laughed.
“Do you understand why I don’t trust you?”
“Yes.”
That answer made me angrier.
Grant sat nearby.
His shoulder wound was shallow.
The bullet had passed through soft tissue.
He watched me.
Not with ownership.
Not with calculation.
With something almost like shame.
Michael Reeves had been taken into Kingsley security custody pending federal transfer.
Theresa Vale remained missing.
Dr. Cole remained missing.
The Bluebird network was active.
But Ellie was no longer the beneficiary.
I was.
Which meant the danger had moved from my child to me.
I accepted that gladly.
At 6:14 a.m., my phone filled with headlines.
KINGSL EY HOLDINGS BOARD UNDER REVIEW.
FEDERAL AUTHORITIES FREEZE MULTIPLE BLUEBIRD-LINKED ACCOUNTS.
SENATOR RESIGNS AFTER SEALED FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE.
EUROPEAN BANK EXECUTIVES SUSPENDED.
Then another headline appeared.
MERCER DEVELOPMENT CEO ACCUSED OF CUSTODY FRAUD.
Grant read it over my shoulder.
His face did not change.
“You’ll be arrested.”
He nodded.
“Probably.”
“For falsifying evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Bribing a witness.”
“Yes.”
“Misusing Kingsley resources.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“I won’t fight it.”
I stared.
“You fight everything.”
“Not this.”
“Why?”
“Because I did it.”
Such a simple sentence.
I hated how rare it had been in our marriage.
Celeste sat across the room.
She had removed the gold dress and wrapped herself in a security jacket.
She looked exhausted.
Grant glanced at her.
“I owe you an apology too.”
Celeste laughed.
“No.”
He frowned.
“No?”
“You owe me nothing I want.”
Grant accepted that.
Maren stood near the telescope.
My twin looked at me as though we were strangers.
We were.
Shared blood did not create shared history.
My mother watched both of us.
Her expression was filled with grief.
I walked toward her.
“Why did you leave me?”
She looked at me.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“I know.”
“You faked your death.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe I lost you.”
“Yes.”
“You lived with Maren.”
“For many years.”
I looked at my sister.
“While I had Dad.”
“Yes.”
“And she had you.”
“Yes.”
It felt like our parents had divided themselves along with their daughters.
One twin for each lie.
My mother reached for my hand.
I stepped back.
Pain crossed her face.
“I’m not ready.”
“I understand.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t.”
Her eyes filled.
“You’re right.”
That was the first answer from a parent that did not make me want to scream.
Victor approached.
“We need to leave.”
“Where?”
“Kingsley headquarters.”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
Victor looked at him.
“Federal investigators are already there.”
“Exactly.”
I turned.
“Why should that stop me?”
Henry stared at me.
“You just exposed half the board.”
“Good.”
“Mara.”
“I am going.”
Grant spoke.
“I’m coming.”
I laughed.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Mara.”
“You are going to a hospital.”
“My father—”
“Is in custody.”
“Cole is not.”
“Neither is Theresa.”
“And that changes nothing.”
Grant stood despite the pain.
“It changes everything.”
I stared.
He continued.
“I built the custody case using Cole.”
“I know his patterns.”
“His clinics.”
“His private offices.”
“His accounts.”
Victor frowned.
“You think he will run?”
“No.”
Grant looked at me.
“I think he’ll come to Kingsley headquarters.”
“Why?”
“Because the Bluebird ledger identifies him.”
Victor shook his head.
“Then he would avoid the building.”
Grant looked toward my father.
“No.”
“Cole spent years waiting for Bluebird.”
“He won’t run while the final beneficiary is exposed.”
My stomach tightened.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
Maren stepped closer.
“Grant is right.”
I looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because Cole likes control.”
“Daniel learned that before he died.”
Grant nodded.
“He will want to explain.”
Celeste whispered.
“To Mara?”
“No.”
Grant looked at Ellie outside.
“To Henry.”
My father became still.
I looked at him.
“What does Cole have against you?”
Henry did not answer.
“Dad.”
He exhaled.
“Samuel Cole was the doctor who delivered you and Maren.”
Silence.
My mother looked away.
I felt cold.
“And Adrian?”
“His son.”
Grant whispered.
“He knows what happened at St. Catherine’s.”
“Yes.”
Maren turned.
“You never told me that.”
My father looked ashamed.
“I did not know Adrian was involved until later.”
“When?”
“After Daniel died.”
Maren’s face hardened.
“You knew Cole killed Daniel?”
“I suspected.”
“You let him keep practicing?”
“I needed evidence.”
Maren crossed the room.
She slapped my father.
The sound cracked through the observatory.
Nobody moved.
“You needed evidence.”
Henry lowered his head.
“My husband needed to live.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Maren’s voice shook.
“You know nothing.”
She stepped back.
I understood something then.
My father had spent his life sacrificing people for proof.
My mother had killed to protect people.
Grant had destroyed trust for leverage.
Maren kidnapped a child for safety.
Victor lied for loyalty.
Every adult in Ellie’s life had convinced themselves that the end justified the method.
I would not become another one.
I looked at Grant.
“You go to the hospital.”
“Mara.”
“That is not negotiable.”
He almost smiled.
“Still giving orders.”
“Yes.”
“What happens after?”
I knew what he meant.
Us.
Our marriage.
Our family.
I looked at the man who had thrown money at my feet only hours earlier.
“There is no after for us.”
Pain crossed his face.
He nodded.
“I know.”
Ellie ran inside.
“Daddy.”
Grant crouched despite his wound.
She hugged him.
I watched him close his eyes.
I wanted Ellie to have a father.
But I would never again give Grant the power to define my reality.
Those were separate things.
Grant kissed her hair.
“I love you, Blue—”
He stopped.
His face broke.
“Ellie.”
She smiled.
“I love you too.”
My satellite phone vibrated.
A secure alert.
KINGSL EY HEADQUARTERS.
EXECUTIVE FLOOR BREACH.
I showed Victor.
His face hardened.
Grant looked at the message.
“I told you.”
Another alert appeared.
A security camera still image.
Dr. Adrian Cole stood inside my father’s old office.
He was holding a folder.
On the folder was written one name.
MARA.
May you like
Then the camera feed cut out.
