Chapter 1: The First Move

The sound of sirens reached the penthouse before Clare lost consciousness.
Three minutes later, the private elevator opened.
Not to Matthew.
But to six members of Sterling Executive Security.
Their black suits blended into the shadows as they spread through the apartment with practiced precision.
At their center stood Henderson.
He had protected Richard Sterling for twenty-three years.
He had also watched Clare grow from a stubborn little girl into the woman who had walked away from her family's fortune for love.
His face hardened the moment he saw her.
"Call Dr. Lawson. Now."
Two paramedics rushed inside behind him.
As they carefully lifted Clare onto a stretcher, Henderson noticed the hickory cane lying beside the sofa.
He didn't touch it.
Instead, he photographed it from every angle.
The blood.
The fingerprints.
The shattered glass.
The bruises spreading across Clare's arms.
Every detail became evidence.
Richard Sterling arrived before the ambulance doors closed.
He looked nothing like the polished billionaire the financial magazines admired.
His tie was missing.
His white shirt was wrinkled.
His silver hair was soaked from the rain.
For several seconds, he simply stared at his daughter.
Then he gently brushed a strand of hair away from her swollen face.
"I'm here."
Clare reached for his hand.
"I should have called sooner."
Richard smiled sadly.
"You called exactly when you needed to."
He kissed her forehead.
Then he stood.
His expression changed instantly.
Cold.
Focused.
Merciless.
"Henderson."
"Yes, sir."
"I want everything."
"The surveillance."
"The medical records."
"The financial records."
"The phone records."
"The board minutes."
"If Matthew Hayes has built his empire on lies..."
May you like
He looked once more at the ambulance.
"Tonight we begin removing every brick."
