Chapter 2: Cracks in the Empire

At exactly 6:30 the following morning, Matthew Hayes walked confidently into NexusCore's Manhattan headquarters.

He expected applause.

Instead, he found silence.

Employees avoided eye contact.

Board members whispered in corners.

His assistant hurried toward him, pale as paper.

"Mr. Hayes..."

"What?"

"The banks..."

"What about them?"

"They suspended the acquisition financing."

Matthew laughed.

"Temporary compliance review."

"No."

She swallowed.

"They canceled it."

His phone rang.

It was another lender.

Then another.

Then another.

Every credit facility had been frozen.

Every merger negotiation placed on hold.

Within minutes, NexusCore's stock began falling.

Three percent.

Seven.

Twelve.

News channels reported an anonymous whistleblower had submitted documents suggesting accounting irregularities dating back four years.

Matthew's confidence finally cracked.

"Who leaked this?"

No one answered.

Across town, Richard Sterling quietly watched the market screens from his office.

He hadn't made a single public statement.

He didn't need to.
