Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT MY BODY BEGAN TO SHUT DOWN

The crisis came at 2:18 in the morning.

I woke unable to breathe.

The room seemed to shrink around me.

My heart pounded too quickly, paused, then struck again with painful force.

I reached for the nurse button.

My hand missed.

The cardiac monitor screamed.

Elena entered first.

She called a rapid response team.

Within seconds, the room filled with doctors.

My potassium level had climbed dangerously high.

Fluid surrounded my lungs.

My blood pressure was collapsing.

Dr. Shah stood above me while the team prepared emergency dialysis.

“Maya, stay awake.”

I tried.

The ceiling lights stretched into long white lines.

Someone placed an oxygen mask over my face.

Someone else inserted another line into my neck.

I heard Elena calling my name.

Then everything disappeared.

My heart stopped for thirty-one seconds.

The medical team restored it.

When I regained consciousness, I was in intensive care.

A ventilator breathed for me.

My wrists were restrained gently so I would not pull out the tubes.

Dr. Shah stood beside the bed.

Her eyes were red.

She explained what happened after the breathing tube was removed.

“We almost lost you.”

I could not speak.

She held up a scan result.

“The bleeding in your head has resolved.”

“Neurology cleared you.”

“The transplant committee restored your active status last night.”

I stared at her.

She took my hand.

“There is more.”

A compatible donor kidney had become available in Wisconsin.

The surgical team was transporting it to Chicago.

The donor was a thirty-five-year-old woman who had died after a sudden brain aneurysm.

Her family chose to donate her organs.

Surgery would begin within hours if my heart remained stable.

I cried without sound.

Somewhere, another family was experiencing the worst night of their lives.

In the middle of their grief, they had given a stranger the possibility of morning.

I signed the consent forms with a trembling hand.

This time, no one stood over me.

May you like

No one demanded my signature.

The choice was mine.
