Chapter 15 - THE FAMILY PICKED SIDES

Once Teresa’s video became known to the family, the phone calls started.
Some relatives apologized.
Others defended her.
Aunt Betsy called me selfish.
“She made mistakes.”
“Fraud is not a mistake.”
“She raised you.”
“That does not give her my house.”
“She sacrificed her life.”
“That does not give her my wife.”
Betsy went quiet.
Then she said something unforgivable.
“Amy could have been more respectful.”
I ended the call.
That afternoon, six relatives arrived at my house.
Not to apologize to Amy.
To pressure me into dropping the civil suit.
They said court would destroy the family.
I opened the door wider.
“A sick one-year-old sat in that kitchen while you ate seafood.”
Nobody answered.
“My wife washed your dishes while holding him.”
One cousin looked at the ground.
“You watched.”
Silence.
“And now you’re worried court might make the family look bad?”
I stepped back.
“The family already looked bad.”
Then Amy came downstairs.
Everyone became uncomfortable.
She walked toward the group calmly.
“I remember every person who asked me for another drink that day.”
Nobody moved.
“I remember every plate you left beside the sink.”
Aunt Betsy’s daughter started crying.
Amy continued.
“I remember begging Teresa to let me take Frederick upstairs.”
Her voice broke.
“I remember none of you saying anything.”
That was the first moment the family truly understood that the story was no longer controlled by Teresa.
They left quietly.
Not everyone stayed loyal to her after that.
Three cousins contacted Detective Reed.
One remembered Teresa asking about my signature.
Another had seen Victor at family gatherings.
A third provided a recording from Christmas.
In it, Teresa bragged that everything I owned would “come back where it belonged.”
Then came the biggest surprise.
Betsy changed sides.
She arrived at Rachel’s office carrying a metal box.
“I found this in Teresa’s garage.”
Inside were my father’s original financial records.
Letters.
Cancelled checks.
And a handwritten journal.
The final pages documented his suspicions about Teresa.
His last entry was short.
IF CONNOR EVER READS THIS, I HOPE HE LEARNS SOMETHING I LEARNED TOO LATE.
LOVE WITHOUT BOUNDARIES BECOMES PERMISSION.
I closed the journal.
Then Rachel’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
Teresa had been arrested again.
This time, federal agents had come for her.

And this time, there would be no quick trip home.
