Chapter 11 - THE CUSTODY THREAT

Victoria’s next move was personal.
Her attorney filed papers seeking emergency grandparent access to the twins.
Grant separately filed for temporary parenting time.
I had expected Grant to ask.
I had not expected Victoria to attack.
Her filing described me as unstable, deceptive, controlling, and obsessed with wealth.
It claimed my emergency asset freeze proved I was willing to use money as punishment.
Rachel finished reading and looked across the table.
“She wants us angry.”
“Then we give her boring.”
Facts.
Medical records.
The hospital examination after the snow.
Security footage.
The paternity report.
Messages from Grant.
Statements from mansion staff.
No theatrics.
No press conference.
At the emergency hearing, Victoria arrived wearing pearls.
Grant sat separately.
That mattered.
His attorney informed the judge that Grant did not support his mother’s petition.
Victoria turned toward him as if he had struck her.
Grant did not look back.
The judge reviewed the foyer footage privately.
When court resumed, her expression had changed.
Victoria’s emergency request was denied.
Grant received limited supervised visitation pending further family-court review.
I did not celebrate.
The boys were not prizes.
They were not leverage.
They were children.
Afterward, Grant approached me in the corridor.
“Thank you for not fighting the visits.”
“I am fighting for what is safe.”
“I understand.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You’re beginning to.”
He lowered his eyes.
Then he said something unexpected.
“My mother told me something last night.”
“You spoke to her?”
“She called from another number.”
“What did she say?”
“She said Malcolm has copies of documents that could destroy Dad’s reputation.”
“Arthur is dead.”
“I know.”
Grant’s voice shook.
“But she said some of the documents have your signature too.”
I went still.
“What documents?”
“She wouldn’t tell me.”
Rachel and I exchanged a look.
Malcolm had possessed copies of my trust records.
Lauren had stolen files.
The forged guarantee used my private signature.
What else had they created?
That evening, the answer arrived.
A major financial newspaper contacted Vale Meridian for comment on alleged documents suggesting I had personally authorized questionable transfers connected to the old Ashford rescue.
The reporter sent us copies.
My signature appeared on six documents.
All forged.
But unlike the recent guarantee, these documents were dated eleven years earlier.
Before Lauren Pike ever worked for me.
Before Grant and I married.
Before Malcolm should have had access to my signature.
Unless he had received it from someone else.
I looked at the oldest page.
Then I remembered.
Arthur Ashford had seen my original financing agreement eleven years ago.
One signed copy had remained in his private office.
Arthur was dead.
His office had been cleared by Victoria.
The leak had not started four months earlier.
May you like
Victoria had possessed my signature for years.
And Malcolm had spent years learning how to weaponize it.
