Chapter 13 - WHY GRANT MET ME

I remembered the night I met Grant.

A charity design auction in Boston.

He had spilled sparkling water near my sketches.

I laughed.

He apologized.

We talked for three hours.

For years, I considered it the most ordinary beautiful moment of my life.

Now Malcolm’s file made me question it.

PROJECT HEIRESS CONTROL.

Nine years old.

Grant and I met eight years earlier.

Rachel hated the coincidence.

So did I.

We reconstructed the event.

Guest lists.

Donors.

Sponsors.

Emails.

Grant had been invited by an Ashford foundation representative.

The representative was Victoria.

My invitation came from an arts nonprofit.

One of its major corporate sponsors that year had been a company controlled by Malcolm.

My chest tightened.

Had they placed us in the same room?

Grant came to my office voluntarily when Rachel requested an interview.

I placed the event records in front of him.

He looked confused.

Then horrified.

“You think I was sent to meet you?”

“I’m asking.”

“No.”

“Did your mother tell you I would be there?”

“No.”

“Did she encourage you to attend?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She said I needed to network.”

Grant began pacing.

Then he stopped.

“There was something.”

“What?”

“She asked about you afterward.”

My throat tightened.

“What did she ask?”

“Whether you had family money.”

Rachel and I exchanged a glance.

“What did you tell her?”

“That you were a designer.”

Grant sat down heavily.

“I thought she was being snobbish.”

“She was investigating me.”

He nodded slowly.

Then his face changed.

“She kept encouraging me to see you.”

A silence fell over the room.

That hurt more than I expected.

Not because Grant had necessarily been part of the plan.

Because something I treasured might have been engineered by people who saw me as a balance sheet.

Grant looked at me.

“Evelyn, I fell in love with you.”

“I believe you believed that.”

His face crumpled.

“That’s not fair.”

“No.”

I stood.

“What happened to me in your foyer was not fair.”

He said nothing.

We later found an email from Victoria to Malcolm dated the morning after the auction.

G met Vale girl.

No suspicion.

Malcolm replied.

Let nature do the rest.

My hands shook when I read it.

They had arranged proximity.

They had not controlled what came afterward.

My marriage had not been entirely fake.

That almost made it worse.

Grant had truly loved me once.

And then, over years, he had allowed entitlement, pride, and his mother’s poison to turn that love into contempt.

Rachel closed the file.

“They created the first meeting.”

“Yes.”

“But Grant created everything after it.”

I looked at my sons through the nursery camera on my phone.

That distinction mattered.

Manipulation explained beginnings.

It did not excuse endings.

Then another recovered email arrived.

This one was from Arthur Ashford to Victoria.

Leave Evelyn alone.

She is not our solution.

She is Grant’s choice.

May you like

Arthur had discovered their plan.

And he had tried to stop it.
