Chapter 2: The Truth Margaret Never Knew

Samuel carefully placed the broken badge on the podium.
"There is one more thing everyone deserves to know."
Emily shook her head.
"Please..."
Samuel smiled gently.
"You've hidden long enough."
He looked toward the donors.
"Three years ago, Emily disappeared from public recognition after donating one of her kidneys."
The ballroom became completely still.
Margaret frowned.
"To whom?"
Samuel answered without hesitation.
"To my daughter."
The audience erupted.
"My daughter had less than forty-eight hours to live."
Samuel's voice trembled.
"Emily wasn't related to us."
"She refused payment."
"She refused publicity."
"She only asked that no one ever reveal her name."
Margaret's knees weakened.
She remembered every cruel thing she had said to Emily over the past three years.
Lazy.
Attention seeker.
Gold digger.
Fake nurse.
None of it had been true.
Samuel slowly turned toward Margaret.
"Do you know why she hid all of this?"
Margaret couldn't answer.
Samuel looked toward Emily.
"Because she said heroes belong beside patients—not above them."
Even the donors stood to applaud.
Across the room, Margaret's son, Daniel Whitmore, finally stepped forward.
He stared at his wife with tears in his eyes.
"I didn't know..."
Emily smiled sadly.
"I never wanted you to marry a reputation."
"I wanted you to marry me."
Daniel looked toward his mother.

His expression hardened.
"What have you done?"
