Chapter 3: The Price of Pride

Margaret tried to apologize.
"Emily... I..."
Emily quietly picked up the broken plastic pieces of her badge.
"This badge can be replaced."
She looked directly into Margaret's eyes.
"But respect cannot."
Those words struck harder than any insult.
Samuel addressed the donors once more.
"I was planning to announce tonight's recipient of the Lifetime Humanitarian Leadership Award."
He smiled.
"I think everyone already knows who deserves it."
The audience rose in a standing ovation.
Hundreds of physicians, nurses, philanthropists, and former patients applauded until the room echoed.
Samuel invited Emily onto the stage.
Instead of accepting the crystal trophy immediately, Emily walked down from the platform.
She stopped beside the housekeeping staff lined against the ballroom wall.
She invited every cleaner, transporter, cafeteria worker, and nursing assistant to stand with her.
"This hospital saves lives together."
"No badge is more important than another."
The applause became even louder.
Several donors immediately pledged millions toward staff education and emergency assistance programs inspired by Emily's example.
Daniel approached his wife.
"I'm so sorry."
Emily searched his face.
"You weren't the one who tore off my badge."
"No."
He looked toward Margaret.
"But I stood there and let it happen."
