Chapter 1 — The Boardroom Reckoning
At exactly 9:00 the next morning, the executive board assembled in the top-floor conference room of Parker Freight Solutions.
Ethan arrived wearing his usual tailored navy suit.
His confidence lasted only until his access badge failed at the boardroom door.
The board chairman opened the door himself.
"Mr. Parker... as a courtesy, you're permitted to attend today's meeting."
"As a guest."
Ethan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
I walked into the room carrying a single leather portfolio.
Every director stood.
Not for him.
For me.
Linda had always introduced me as Ethan's wife.
Today the chairman introduced me differently.
"Good morning, Chairwoman Parker."
Ethan slowly turned toward me.
"You never told me..."
"No," I replied.
"I didn't."
"You never asked."

His corporate authority ended before the meeting adjourned.
