Chapter 2 – The House Was Never Hers

The dining room fell into absolute silence.

No one moved.

No one even reached for a glass of water.

Attorney Robert Miller calmly removed a thick folder from his leather briefcase and placed it on the dining table.

"I believe everyone should hear this together."

My mother crossed her arms.

"This is my house."

Robert adjusted his glasses.

"Actually..."

He opened the file.

"...it legally belongs to Hannah Brooks."

Every face turned toward me.

"What?" I whispered.

Chloe laughed loudly.

"This has to be a joke."

"It isn't."

Robert slid a certified deed across the table.

"Ten years ago, your father established an irrevocable trust."

My mother's confidence began to fade.

"He transferred ownership of this property into that trust."

Robert looked directly at me.

"You became the sole owner on your twenty-eighth birthday."

My mother slammed both hands onto the table.

"He never told me!"

"He wasn't required to."

Robert remained perfectly calm.

"He instructed me to reveal the documents only after his death."

Chloe snatched the paperwork.

"She's lying!"

Robert quietly handed her another document.

"That is the notarized copy filed with the county recorder."

Chloe's face slowly turned pale.

I couldn't understand.

"My father... gave me the house?"

Robert nodded.

"He told me something I'll never forget."

He unfolded a handwritten letter.

"If my family ever forces Hannah to choose between peace and fairness, remind her that kindness should never require surrendering what is rightfully hers."

Tears filled my eyes.
