Chapter 3 – The Truth My Father Already Knew

No one spoke.

Until Robert reached into his briefcase once more.

"There is another document."

My mother suddenly looked frightened.

"What document?"

"A private journal your husband left with me."

Her face lost all color.

"He requested it remain sealed unless there was a dispute over the inheritance."

Robert opened the journal.

"The final entry reads..."

He paused.

"I know Margaret has been secretly transferring money to Chloe."

Gasps echoed around the room.

My mother's lips trembled.

"That's not true."

Robert continued reading.

"I've watched thousands disappear from our joint accounts over the last three years."

My sister shook her head.

"Dad misunderstood."

"He didn't."

Robert produced bank statements.

Every transfer was documented.

Luxury handbags.

A sports car.

Vacations.

Designer jewelry.

All paid using family funds without my father's knowledge.

Then came the final sentence from Dad's journal.

"I forgive them.

But I will not reward dishonesty.

Everything that remains should belong to the daughter who asked for nothing."

Silence crushed the room.

Jason, my boyfriend, finally spoke.

"Hannah..."

I looked at him.

"You knew?"

He lowered his head.

"I thought your father would eventually change his will."

"You watched them humiliate me."

He couldn't answer.

That silence told me everything.

I slipped the ring from my finger.

"I deserve someone who speaks before it's too late."

May you like

I placed it gently on the table.

The engagement ended with one quiet movement.
