Chapter 2: The Truth My Wife Was Too Afraid to Tell

The emergency room doors closed behind the doctors.
I stood there holding my seven-day-old son against my chest, praying I wasn't already too late.
Santiago had been rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit with severe dehydration and a high fever.
Valeria was taken to another floor.
The nurse gently stopped me.
"Your wife needs treatment immediately."
I nodded.
"I understand."
"No," she said quietly.
"I don't think you do."
Two hours later, the pediatrician finally returned.
His expression told me everything before he spoke.
"Your son is stable."
I nearly collapsed.
"But..."
He looked directly into my eyes.
"This wasn't caused by illness."
"He was severely dehydrated."
"He hadn't been fed properly."
"He remained in a soiled diaper for far too long."
"And someone ignored his fever."
Every sentence felt like another knife.
Then Dr. Elena Morales, the physician treating Valeria, asked me to enter a private consultation room.
She closed the door.
"Mr. Torres..."
"Has your wife ever been abused?"
I shook my head immediately.
"Never."
"Not by me."
"I'm not asking about you."
She slid several photographs across the desk.
Bruises around both wrists.
Finger marks on her upper arms.
Deep scratches across her shoulders.
"They're recent."
"They happened after childbirth."
I stared at the pictures.
"I don't understand."
Dr. Morales hesitated.
"When your wife regained consciousness..."
"...she asked us one question."
"What?"
"She whispered..."
"'Can I call my husband now?'"
I frowned.
"Of course she could."
The doctor looked at me sadly.
"She believed she wasn't allowed."
That afternoon, I finally sat beside Valeria's hospital bed.
She looked impossibly fragile.
Her lips were cracked.
Dark circles surrounded her eyes.
When she saw me...
She cried.
Not loudly.
Just silently.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I took her hand.
"Sorry?"
"For what?"
"I couldn't protect Santiago."
I squeezed her hand.
"You don't have to apologize."
She closed her eyes.
"They wouldn't let me call you."
Everything inside me stopped.
"What do you mean?"
"My phone disappeared the morning after you left."
"Your mother said it was broken."
"Every time I asked to borrow hers..."
"...she said you were too busy."
I felt sick.
"They lied to both of us."
Valeria nodded.
"They told me you said I was overreacting."
May you like
"They said you were tired of listening to me complain."
"I believed them."
