Chapter 3: The House Cameras Remembered Everything

I left the hospital with one purpose.

The truth.

When I entered our apartment, my mother was calmly drinking coffee.

Brenda scrolled through her phone.

Neither looked concerned.

My mother smiled.

"How are my grandson and daughter-in-law?"

I didn't answer.

Instead, I walked straight to the hallway closet.

Brenda frowned.

"What are you doing?"

I pulled out the digital security recorder.

The small system I had installed months earlier after a neighborhood burglary.

I had almost forgotten about it.

My mother hadn't.

Her face immediately turned pale.

Three hours later...

The police sat beside me watching the recordings.

The cameras had no audio.

They didn't need it.

The pictures were enough.

The first day showed Valeria struggling to breastfeed while recovering from childbirth.

My mother entered.

She took the baby away.

Valeria reached for him.

My mother walked away.

The next clip showed Brenda unplugging the bedroom phone.

Another showed my mother removing Valeria's cellphone from the bedside table and placing it inside her purse.

Then came the footage that made every officer in the room fall silent.

Valeria slowly walked toward the kitchen, still bleeding from childbirth.

She tried to prepare a bottle.

My mother stood in front of the refrigerator.

She deliberately blocked her path.

Brenda laughed.

Valeria returned to the bedroom empty-handed.

Hours later...

Santiago cried continuously.

No one entered.

Not for almost two hours.

One detective quietly whispered,

"My God..."

The final recording showed Valeria collapsing beside the bed while trying to reach her baby.

Neither my mother nor Brenda helped her.

They simply closed the bedroom door.

The lead investigator looked at me.

"Mr. Torres..."

"This is criminal neglect."

"And possibly unlawful imprisonment."

I couldn't speak.

Every instinct inside me wanted to believe there had been some mistake.

But the cameras never lied.
