Chapter 2 – The Restaurant Witnesses

The dining room remained silent.

No one reached for their food.

No one looked away.

David slowly released Maya's hair, forcing an awkward smile as though the entire incident had been a misunderstanding.

"It was just an argument," he said. "She's my wife."

The restaurant manager stepped forward immediately.

"Sir, whether she's your wife or not, what you just did is unacceptable."

Rebecca stood so abruptly that her chair nearly tipped over.

"You people are overreacting."

"Families argue."

An elderly man dining near the window quietly stood.

"So do families like mine," he said. "But I've been married forty-eight years, and I've never laid a hand on my wife."

Another voice followed.

Then another.

The young waitress who had frozen in fear finally spoke.

"I saw everything."

"So did I," said a businessman from the next table.

Within moments, several guests offered to remain until police arrived.

One woman handed Maya a clean napkin.

Another gently helped her stand.

For the first time in years, Maya realized something.

The shame wasn't hers.

It belonged to the man who hurt her.

When Boston police officers entered the restaurant minutes later, David immediately changed his tone.

"My wife is emotional."

"We had a disagreement."

One officer looked toward the diners.

"Did anyone witness what happened?"

Nearly every hand in the room went up.

David's confidence disappeared.
