Chapter 4 – The Day Maya Found Her Voice
The courtroom overflowed with reporters.
The restaurant incident had sparked widespread attention after several witnesses shared their experiences with investigators.
Every person who had raised a hand that night testified.
The waitress.
The elderly couple.
The businessman.
Even the restaurant manager.
But the most powerful testimony came from Maya.
She stood before the jury with steady hands.
"I thought surviving meant staying quiet."
"I was wrong."
"Surviving meant telling the truth."
David refused to look at her.
Rebecca maintained her familiar expression of superiority until prosecutors played one recording recovered from her phone.
Her own voice echoed through the courtroom.
"A husband who can't control his wife isn't much of a man."
The silence that followed was overwhelming.
The jury found David guilty of assault and related offenses, and Rebecca was convicted for her role in encouraging and helping sustain the abuse.
As deputies escorted them away, David finally turned toward Maya.
"I'm sorry."
She met his eyes calmly.
"No."
