Chapter 1 – The Locket Opens

The wedding hall had never been quieter.

More than two hundred guests stood frozen beneath crystal chandeliers as Sarah stared at the antique silver locket resting in her trembling hands.

It couldn't be.

Her mother had been buried with it twelve years earlier.

Sarah looked down at the six-year-old flower girl.

"Lily... who gave this to you?"

The little girl's lower lip trembled.

"A nice old man."

Sarah frowned.

"What was his name?"

Lily slowly shook her head.

"He said I should only tell you after you opened it."

David stepped closer, placing a gentle hand on Sarah's shoulder.

"Open it."

With trembling fingers, Sarah pressed the tiny clasp.

Click.

The heart-shaped locket opened.

Instead of finding the faded photograph she had remembered since childhood...

There were two photographs.

One was the familiar picture of Sarah sitting on her mother's lap when she was four years old.

The second photograph stole the air from her lungs.

It showed her mother holding a newborn baby.

Standing beside her...

Was a little girl no older than three.

The child wasn't Sarah.

Folded tightly behind the photographs rested a yellowed piece of paper.

Sarah carefully unfolded it.

The handwriting belonged to only one person.

Her mother's.

"If you are reading this, then the promise I made has finally found its way home."

Sarah's vision blurred.

David quietly took the note and continued reading aloud.

"Sarah, if fate allows this letter to reach you, it means someone finally had the courage to reveal the truth."

Every guest listened in complete silence.

May you like

"You were never my only daughter."

Sarah's knees nearly gave way.
