Chapter 3 – The Truth Buried for Twenty Years

Thomas Hale was found later that evening at a nearby nursing home.

He was ninety years old.

Weak.

But his memory remained remarkably clear.

The moment Sarah entered his room, tears filled his eyes.

"You have your mother's smile."

Sarah sat beside him.

"Please tell me about Grace."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"The flood never took her."

He explained everything.

Twenty-three years earlier, a powerful child-trafficking ring had operated across several states.

During the confusion after the flood, Grace had been kidnapped.

Police searched for months.

They found nothing.

Sarah's mother refused to give up.

She spent years following every lead.

Then she became ill.

Before her death, she entrusted Thomas with the family locket.

"If Grace is ever found..."

"...or if Sarah is finally ready..."

"...give it back."

Thomas searched for years.

Then only weeks earlier...

A DNA genealogy website connected two distant relatives.

The impossible had finally become possible.

Grace had survived.

She had been illegally adopted under another name.

She was alive.

Sarah covered her mouth as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Where is she?"

Thomas smiled.

"You've already met her."

Sarah stared in confusion.

Thomas looked toward the hallway.

A young woman stepped quietly into the room.

She was twenty-seven years old.

Her hazel eyes mirrored Sarah's perfectly.

"So..."

May you like

the young woman whispered.

"I guess you're my sister."
