Chapter 1: The Hidden Truth

I expected the security footage to confirm what I had seen.
I wasn't prepared for how much worse it really was.
The timestamp on the first video read 3:14 p.m., ninety-eight days earlier.
Vanessa stood in the living room speaking with a man I had never met.
He wore an expensive gray suit and carried a leather briefcase.
"I need the medical reports to look convincing," he said.
Vanessa nodded.
"They're almost ready."
"And the old woman?"
Vanessa glanced toward the hallway.
"She'll sign anything eventually."
"If she refuses..."
She smiled coldly.
"...people will simply believe she's no longer competent."
I paused the recording.
My mother's signature.
Her assets.
The house.
None of this had been about impatience or resentment.
It had been a calculated plan.
The next clips revealed even more.
Elena secretly bringing food to my mother after Vanessa locked her bedroom door.
Vanessa throwing away prescribed medication.
Phone calls arranging forged evaluations.
Every lie.
Every threat.
Every act of intimidation.
By sunrise, I had copied every recording onto three encrypted drives.
Then I called my attorney.

"We're not dealing with family problems anymore," I told her.
"We're dealing with fraud."
