Chapter 1: The Smile That Changed Everything

Julian Cole leaned back against the marble fireplace, admiring the terrified expression he expected to see on his new bride.
Instead, Emily slowly lifted her eyes.
For the first time since he had met her two years earlier, she smiled.
It wasn't the timid smile of the shy country girl he believed he had molded.
It was calm.
Confident.
Almost amused.
Julian frowned.
"What are you smiling at?"
Emily glanced at the leather whip lying across the silk sheets before looking back at him.
"I was just wondering," she said quietly, "how many women you showed that to before me."
The question caught him off guard.
"What?"
"You've rehearsed this, haven't you?"
Julian laughed, trying to recover his confidence.
"You'll be declared mentally unstable before sunrise. No one will ever believe a word you say."
Emily tilted her head.
"You've said enough already."
Julian's smile slowly disappeared.
"What do you mean?"
Emily gently touched the diamond necklace resting against her throat.
"The gift you insisted I wear."
His eyes narrowed.
"What about it?"
"It isn't just a necklace."
At that exact moment, hundreds of feet below the penthouse, Detective Rebecca Lawson removed one earbud inside an unmarked surveillance van.
She looked toward her team.
"We've got the confession."
Every threat...
Every admission...
Every detail of Julian's plan had been recorded in real time.
The operation that had taken three years to build had finally reached its final stage.
Back upstairs, Julian suddenly realized something was terribly wrong.
"You planned this..."
Emily's smile widened.
"No, Julian."
May you like
"I survived this."
"You planned your own downfall."
