President Trump: U.S. Not Ready for a Ceasefire With Iran

Trump Says Iran Ready for Ceasefire, But U.S. Not Yet as Terms ‘Not Good Enough’

U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran appears willing to pursue a ceasefire agreement, but he is not prepared to accept the current proposal because the conditions are not strong enough for the United States.

Speaking in an interview with NBC News on March 14, Trump stated that while Tehran is showing interest in negotiations, the terms currently being discussed do not meet Washington’s expectations.

“Iran wants a deal, but I don’t,” Trump said. “The terms right now are not good enough. Any agreement has to be very strong.”

When asked what conditions a potential ceasefire might include, the U.S. president declined to provide details. However, he acknowledged that any agreement would likely require Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

Trump’s comments came after Reuters reported that his administration had set aside several efforts aimed at pushing forward ceasefire negotiations. Iranian officials have not confirmed Trump’s claim that Tehran has expressed a willingness to enter talks.

In previous statements, Trump outlined several demands for Iran, including ending its nuclear program and limiting its ballistic missile development. He has also hinted that Washington wants influence over the selection of Iran’s future Supreme Leader.

During the interview, Trump also raised questions about the status of Mojtaba Khamenei, who recently assumed the role of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Trump said he was unsure whether Khamenei was still alive, noting that he had not appeared publicly.

“If he is alive, he should do something smart for his country — and that would be surrender,” Trump said, adding that rumors about Khamenei’s death remain unverified.
