CHAPTER 3: EVERYTHING COLLAPSES

The first person to move was Madison.

She slowly removed her wedding ring.

Her hands trembled—not from fear, but from disgust.

She looked at Preston for a long moment.

"I almost married you."

Preston reached toward her.

"Madison, listen—"

She stepped back.

"You made an eight-year-old child bleed."

"But she—"

"Don't."

Her voice was calm.

"I just watched you plant your own phone."

She placed the ring on the wedding cake table.

The tiny diamond landed with a sharp click that somehow sounded louder than every violin that had played that evening.

"I will not spend my life wondering when you'll decide to destroy me too."

She walked away.

Half her bridal party followed her.

Across the ballroom, my father's law partners quietly gathered their coats.

One of them looked directly at Richard.

"If you intend to defend this, don't expect our firm to survive the headlines."

Richard's shoulders sagged.

For the first time, the powerful attorney had no argument.

Meanwhile, officers approached Preston.

"We're placing you under arrest on suspicion of assaulting a minor and filing a false report."

Preston looked desperately toward our parents.

"Mom."

Carolyn burst into tears.

"Richard... do something."

Richard remained silent.

There was nothing left to do.

Handcuffs clicked around Preston's wrists.

As he was escorted through the ballroom, nobody applauded.

Nobody defended him.

The guests simply stepped aside.

The same crowd that had watched Sophie be accused now watched the real criminal leave in disgrace.

Outside, the waiting reporters immediately surrounded the police cars.

Within hours, the security footage spread across every local news station.
