CHAPTER 4: THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE

Six months later...

Spring sunlight poured through the windows of a quiet neighborhood café.

Sophie sat across from me wearing a bright yellow dress, carefully decorating a cupcake with pink frosting.

The scar above her eyebrow had faded into a thin silver line.

She smiled again.

She laughed again.

Most importantly...

She trusted people again.

The criminal case ended quickly.

Faced with overwhelming video evidence, Preston pleaded guilty.

He received a prison sentence for assaulting a child, filing a false police report, and evidence tampering.

Richard retired from his law firm after losing both clients and partners.

Carolyn wrote me dozens of letters.

Every one of them began with the words, "I'm sorry."

For months, I couldn't answer.

Not because I hated her.

Because some wounds deserve silence before forgiveness.

One afternoon, Sophie climbed onto my lap.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are Grandma and Grandpa still our family?"

I looked out the café window for a long moment.

Then I smiled gently.

"They're part of our past."

She tilted her head.

"So who's our family now?"

I wrapped my arms around her.

"The people who protect you."

She smiled.

"Like you?"

"Like us."

Outside, the spring breeze carried flower petals across the sidewalk.

For the first time in my life, I realized something beautiful.

Blood may create relatives.

But love, courage, and truth create family.

And sometimes...
