Chapter 10 - THE PERSON ABOVE CALEB

Sophia was taken to the police station.
This time her attorney could not keep every question away.
Investigators had evidence linking her to the factory setup.
They had recordings.
They had the staged assault footage.
They had financial records.
They had Daniel’s statement.
Sophia still refused to identify whoever she claimed was above Caleb.
Ethan watched through one-way glass.
Richard stood beside him.
Sophia looked exhausted.
For the first time since the hallway incident, she appeared smaller than the chaos she had created.
Brooks sat across from her.
“Who is V.H.?”
Sophia stared at the table.
“I don’t know.”
“You said Caleb isn’t in charge.”
“He isn’t.”
“Who is?”
“I don’t know his name.”
“How do you know he exists?”
“Caleb talks to him.”
“By phone?”
“Encrypted messages.”
“Have you seen them?”
“Yes.”
“What name does he use?”
Sophia closed her eyes.
“V.H.”
Brooks leaned forward.
“What does V.H. want?”
“The company.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Brooks waited.
Sophia finally continued.
“Caleb believes V.H. can prove Richard stole Whitmore Holdings from Victor Hale.”
Richard whispered through the glass.
“That is absurd.”
Ethan did not respond.
Brooks asked.
“Does V.H. know you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Sophia’s face tightened.
“I met him once.”
Ethan turned sharply.
Richard stared.
Brooks caught the contradiction.
“You just said you don’t know who he is.”
“I don’t know his real name.”
“When did you meet him?”
“Eight months ago.”
“Where?”
“A private club.”
“What did he look like?”
Sophia hesitated.
“Older.”
“How old?”
“Sixties.”
“Hair?”
“Gray.”
“Height?”
“About six feet.”
“Anything distinctive?”
Sophia’s face went pale.
“A scar.”
“Where?”
“His left hand.”
Richard’s expression changed instantly.
Ethan noticed.
“What?”
Richard did not answer.
“Dad.”
Richard continued staring at Sophia.
Ethan touched his arm.
“Who are you thinking about?”
Richard whispered.
“Samuel Hale.”
Ethan remembered the photograph.
Victor’s son.
The man Richard had been told died thirty years ago.
“That’s impossible.”
Richard’s voice remained low.
“Samuel had a scar across his left hand.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw him get it.”
Ethan stared.
“When?”
“At the lake house.”
Richard looked shaken.
“We were repairing the dock.”
“Dad, you said Samuel died.”
“That is what Victor told everyone.”
Brooks entered the observation room.
Richard immediately spoke.
“Find Samuel Hale.”
Brooks frowned.
“We’ve already started.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward Sophia through the glass.
“She described him.”
Brooks’s expression changed.
“You think V.H. is Samuel?”
“He used his middle name.”
“What?”
“Samuel Victor Hale.”
Ethan understood.
V.H.
Victor Hale.
Not the grandfather.
The grandson of the name.
A borrowed identity.
Brooks looked toward Sophia.
“Why would Samuel fake his death?”
Richard stared through the glass.
“I don’t know.”
Brooks returned to the interview room.
“Did V.H. ever call himself Samuel?”
Sophia’s eyes widened.
That was enough.
Brooks leaned forward.
“You know that name.”
Sophia said nothing.
“Samuel Hale.”
Sophia’s breathing changed.
Brooks repeated.
“Samuel Hale.”
Sophia whispered.
“Caleb called him Uncle Sam once.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Ethan felt a chill.
Samuel Hale was alive.
And Caleb was his son.
That meant the family connection was even closer than the documents suggested.
Richard whispered.
“Victor lied to us all.”
Brooks returned later with archival records.
Samuel Hale had not died.
His death certificate was fraudulent.
There was no corresponding hospital record.
No burial record existed under his legal name.
Twenty-nine years ago, he had simply disappeared.
Months later, a man matching his age began using the name Samuel Mercer in another state.
That man later married Sophia’s mother.
Ethan stared at the record.
“Sophia’s stepfather.”
Richard looked toward the interview room.
“She grew up with him.”
Brooks nodded.
“She didn’t meet V.H. eight months ago.”
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
“She’s lying again.”
Brooks returned to Sophia.
This time she placed a photograph on the table.
Samuel Mercer smiled beside Sophia’s mother at a family picnic.
Sophia stared at it.
Brooks spoke.
“This is your stepfather.”
Sophia’s face went blank.
“Yes.”
“His birth name was Samuel Victor Hale.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
Brooks continued.
“You knew who V.H. was.”
Sophia whispered.
“Yes.”
Ethan looked away.
Richard felt something colder.
The entire marriage now looked different.
Sophia had not merely learned about the Hale family after marrying Ethan.
She had been raised by a Hale.
Brooks asked the question Ethan was terrified to hear.
“When did Samuel first tell you about the Whitmores?”
Sophia whispered.
“When I was thirteen.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
Brooks continued.
“When did he first tell you to get close to Ethan?”
Sophia started crying.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Richard looked at his son.
Brooks repeated the question.
Sophia whispered.
“When I was twenty-one.”
Ethan stepped backward.
He and Sophia had met when she was twenty-three.
Brooks’s voice became quiet.
“Was your marriage to Ethan part of Samuel’s plan?”
Sophia covered her face.
Through the glass, Ethan stared.
Richard moved toward him.
Ethan raised a hand.
“Don’t.”
Richard stopped.
Sophia finally answered.
“At first.”
The words destroyed seventeen years in two syllables.
Ethan walked out of the observation room.
He reached the hallway before Richard caught up.
“Ethan.”
“Don’t.”
Richard stayed several feet away.
Ethan leaned against the wall.
“She married me because of you.”
Richard did not answer.
“She had children with me.”
Richard’s expression changed.
Ethan looked at him.
“She built an entire life.”
Richard spoke quietly.
“People can begin with one motive and develop another.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You defending her now?”
“No.”
Richard looked toward the interview room.
“I’m reminding you that truth is rarely convenient.”
Ethan slid down into a chair.
Brooks emerged fifteen minutes later.
“There’s more.”
Ethan almost laughed.
“Of course there is.”
Brooks held a document.
“Samuel Hale has been using shell companies to accumulate Whitmore Holdings stock for at least nine years.”
Richard stared.
“How much?”
“Just under nine percent.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“That’s not enough for control.”
“No.”
Brooks looked toward Ethan.
“But if he obtained the trust’s forty-two percent, he would have a controlling block.”
Richard understood.
“That was the entire scheme.”
Brooks nodded.
“Remove you.”
“Put Ethan in control.”
“Manipulate Ethan into authorizing a sale.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked toward Sophia.
“And if I refused?”
Brooks hesitated.
“Sophia says there was a contingency.”
Richard’s voice sharpened.
“What contingency?”
Brooks looked at Ethan.
“She says Samuel had documents prepared to implicate Ethan in the trust theft.”
Ethan went pale.
“He planned to blackmail me.”
“Yes.”
Richard stared toward the interview room.
“And Sophia knew.”
Brooks did not answer.
She did not have to.
Then another officer approached.
He handed Brooks a printout.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Richard asked.
Brooks looked at Ethan.
“We found Samuel’s current address.”
Ethan stood.
“Where?”
Brooks looked toward Richard.
“Three blocks from your daughter’s house.”
Richard’s face changed.
Grace.
He called her immediately.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Ethan grabbed his coat.
Brooks shouted for officers.
Richard tried Grace a third time.
The call connected.
No one spoke.
“Grace?”
Silence.
Then a man’s voice answered.
“Hello, Richard.”
Richard went completely still.
Samuel Hale laughed softly.
“It has been a very long time.”
Richard’s face turned pale.
“Where is my daughter?”
Samuel answered.
“With me.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Samuel continued.
May you like
“And this time, you’re going to listen before someone you love pays for your pride.”
