Chapter 9 - SOPHIA DISAPPEARS

Sophia remained missing through the night.

Her car was found in the hotel parking structure.

Her suitcase was still in the room.

The blood on her coat was eventually identified as hers.

The amount was small.

Police could not determine whether she had been seriously harmed.

Ethan sat in the mansion library staring at his silent phone.

He hated Sophia.

He feared for her.

Both emotions existed at the same time.

Grace entered quietly.

“You should sleep.”

“I can’t.”

She sat beside him.

“Neither can Dad.”

Ethan looked toward the study.

Richard had been there for hours.

“I ruined everything.”

Grace frowned.

“Sophia ruined plenty.”

“I hit Dad.”

“Yes.”

“I believed her.”

“Yes.”

“I let her convince me he hated me.”

Grace looked at him.

“She spent months making sure you would.”

Ethan shook his head.

“That doesn’t excuse me.”

“No.”

Grace placed her hand over his.

“But guilt can become another way of avoiding action.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What action?”

“Fix what you can.”

Ethan stared toward the study.

Grace continued.

“Dad may forgive you.”

“He may not.”

“You still owe him the effort.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

His phone vibrated.

A text had arrived.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

One photograph.

Sophia sat tied to a chair.

Her mouth was uncovered.

Her eyes were red.

A newspaper lay beside her.

The date was visible.

Today.

Ethan stood so quickly the chair fell.

Grace grabbed the phone.

“Oh, God.”

A second message appeared.

BRING RICHARD TO THE OLD HALE FACTORY.

NO POLICE.

Richard entered behind them.

He saw the photograph.

His expression became stone.

Ethan shook his head immediately.

“You’re not going.”

Richard looked at him.

“It asks for me.”

“That’s why you’re not going.”

Grace called Brooks.

Ethan did not object.

The message had said no police.

He no longer cared.

Brooks arrived twenty minutes later.

The Hale factory had been abandoned for twelve years.

Victor Hale had owned it before Whitmore Holdings absorbed the property.

Police planned surveillance.

Richard insisted on entering.

Brooks refused.

Richard ignored her.

Ethan argued.

“You are seventy-five years old.”

Richard stared at him.

“I noticed.”

“Someone locked us in a basement yesterday.”

“I noticed that too.”

“They want you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“That is what I intend to find out.”

Ethan’s anger cracked.

“What if they kill you?”

Richard went silent.

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“I already hit you once.”

His voice broke.

“I am not walking into another place and watching someone hurt you because I was too stupid to stop it.”

Richard’s expression softened slightly.

“Then don’t be stupid.”

Ethan almost laughed.

Richard continued.

“We do this with the police.”

Brooks eventually agreed to a controlled approach.

Officers surrounded the property.

Richard and Ethan entered through the front.

The factory smelled of rust and dust.

Their footsteps echoed.

A light glowed in the center of the main floor.

Sophia sat beneath it.

She was still tied to the chair.

Ethan started toward her.

Richard caught his arm.

“Wait.”

Sophia looked up.

Her face changed.

“Ethan.”

He moved closer carefully.

“Are you hurt?”

“My arm.”

“Where is Caleb?”

Sophia’s eyes filled with fear.

“He left.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

Richard scanned the shadows.

“Who tied you up?”

Sophia looked toward him.

“Caleb.”

Richard did not fully believe her.

Neither did Ethan.

Sophia started crying.

“Please.”

Ethan approached.

Richard remained several feet behind.

Sophia whispered.

“He found out I called you.”

Ethan began untying her wrists.

“What does he want from Dad?”

Sophia looked at Richard.

“The shares.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“I will not sign anything.”

Sophia shook her head quickly.

“He knows.”

Ethan stopped.

“Then why bring us here?”

Sophia stared toward the second floor.

“To show you something.”

Richard followed her gaze.

A projector switched on.

An image appeared on the wall.

Old footage.

Victor Hale stood in an office.

Richard appeared beside him.

The date stamp read twenty-four years earlier.

The recording contained audio.

Victor sounded angry.

“You take this company, Richard, and I promise your children will pay.”

Young Richard stepped closer.

“You stole from us.”

Victor laughed.

“You think Eleanor is innocent?”

Richard’s face on the factory floor changed.

The video continued.

Victor pointed toward him.

“Ask your wife where the six million went.”

Richard shouted.

“Stay away from Eleanor.”

Victor smiled.

“Or what?”

Young Richard shoved him.

The recording ended.

Ethan looked at his father.

“What happened after that?”

Richard stared at the blank wall.

“Victor left the company.”

Sophia spoke.

“That video proves you threatened him.”

Richard turned.

“It proves I pushed a thief after he threatened my wife.”

A voice came through the factory speakers.

“Beautiful.”

Everyone froze.

Caleb.

His voice echoed from hidden speakers.

“Richard always has an explanation.”

Richard looked around.

“Come out.”

Caleb laughed.

“No.”

Ethan pulled Sophia behind him.

Caleb continued.

“My grandfather built half your company.”

Richard shouted.

“Your grandfather stole from it.”

“You stole his life.”

“He stole millions.”

“And Eleanor took them back.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

Caleb laughed again.

“You really didn’t know.”

Sophia looked toward Richard.

Neither she nor Ethan understood.

Caleb continued.

“Eleanor found Victor’s secret account.”

Richard whispered.

“I know.”

“But you don’t know what she did with it.”

Richard’s face tightened.

Caleb answered his own question.

“She emptied it.”

Richard stared.

“Where did the money go?”

“Ask Daniel.”

“He says he moved it for her.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Silence.

Richard shouted.

“WHERE?”

Caleb’s voice became quieter.

“To a trust.”

Ethan looked toward his father.

“What trust?”

Caleb answered.

“A trust created for Victor Hale’s descendants.”

Richard’s face changed.

Ethan slowly understood.

Eleanor had discovered Victor stealing.

Instead of returning the money to Whitmore Holdings, she secretly protected it for Victor’s family.

Caleb continued.

“Your wife knew Victor was destroying himself.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“She tried to protect his son.”

“Yes.”

“So the money belonged to your family.”

“Yes.”

“Then what do you want from me?”

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“The money disappeared.”

Richard frowned.

“What?”

“After Eleanor died, the trust was emptied.”

Richard stared.

“By whom?”

“That’s what I spent twenty years trying to discover.”

Ethan looked at Sophia.

“This was never about revenge.”

Sophia looked away.

Caleb answered.

“Revenge became useful.”

Richard shouted toward the darkness.

“Who took the money?”

Caleb’s voice lowered.

“Someone inside your family.”

Richard went still.

“That is why I needed control of the company.”

“To access old records.”

“Yes.”

“You could have asked.”

Caleb laughed so loudly it echoed.

“My grandfather asked.”

“Daniel asked.”

“Sophia asked.”

“Everyone who asked you anything eventually learned Richard Whitmore only listens when someone forces him.”

Richard said nothing.

Caleb continued.

“So I forced you.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You framed my father.”

Caleb answered.

“Your wife framed him.”

Sophia flinched.

Ethan looked at her.

Caleb laughed.

“She did it beautifully too.”

Sophia shouted.

“Shut up!”

Caleb ignored her.

“She knew exactly what you would do, Ethan.”

Ethan’s face went pale.

“She said one scream would be enough.”

Sophia shook her head.

“No.”

Caleb continued.

“She said you were so desperate to protect her that you’d destroy your own father before asking one question.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Sophia whispered.

“I’m sorry.”

Richard looked toward his son.

Then the factory lights went out.

A gunshot echoed somewhere outside.

Police shouted.

Sophia screamed.

Ethan grabbed her.

Richard moved toward cover.

Brooks’s voice came through the darkness.

“EVERYONE DOWN!”

Another sound followed.

Not a gunshot.

An engine.

A metal garage door crashed upward.

Caleb was escaping.

Police pursued.

The lights returned thirty seconds later.

Sophia sat on the floor shaking.

Ethan looked toward her wrists.

The rope had fallen loose.

He froze.

Richard noticed.

The knots had never been tight.

Sophia looked at them.

Her face changed.

Ethan whispered.

“You weren’t a hostage.”

Sophia stood quickly.

“Ethan—”

“You tied yourself.”

“No.”

Richard stepped closer.

“She helped Caleb bring us here.”

Sophia backed away.

“No.”

Ethan stared at the woman he had loved for seventeen years.

“You lied again.”

Sophia’s eyes filled.

Then Detective Brooks entered holding a small evidence bag.

Inside was a remote control.

She looked at Sophia.

“We found this under your chair.”

Sophia stopped breathing.

Brooks continued.

“It controls the projector.”

The factory became silent.

Ethan stared at his wife.

Brooks’s expression hardened.

“Sophia Whitmore, you need to come with me.”

Sophia looked at Ethan.

Then she whispered five words that changed everything again.

May you like

“Caleb isn’t the one running this.”
