Four hours later...
Nathan stepped out of surgery.
Marcus stood before he could even speak.
"Khloe?"
"Alive."
Marcus nearly collapsed with relief.
"And the baby?"
Nathan smiled for the first time all night.
"She's stable."
Marcus covered his face with trembling hands.
But Nathan wasn't finished.
"There is something else."
Marcus looked up.
"The impact could have killed them."
"It didn't."
"Do you know why?"
Marcus shook his head.
Nathan placed an X-ray on the light board.
"The marble table absorbed most of the force."
"But..."
He pointed toward another image.
"Your daughter instinctively shifted position inside the womb."
Marcus stared silently.
Nathan smiled softly.
"She probably saved her mother's life."
Tears filled Marcus's eyes.
Hours later he entered Khloe's recovery room.
She opened her eyes.
"The baby?"
Marcus gently placed her hand over her stomach.
"Our little girl is still fighting."
Khloe smiled through tears.
"I knew she would."
Marcus kissed her forehead.
"No one will ever hurt either of you again."
Outside the room, police officers placed Isabella under arrest.
She screamed.
Threatened lawsuits.
Demanded phone calls.
