SHE LEARNED TO CRY WITHOUT MAKING A SOUND. HER FATHER HAD NO IDEA.

Chapter 2: The Questions Vanessa Couldn't Answer

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Lily remained tucked against her father's chest while Vanessa stood beside the sofa, her crystal glass still in her hand.

The silence stretched.

Then Lily's father slowly stood, lifting her with him.

"Go to your room for a minute, sweetheart," he said softly.

Lily hesitated.

She looked at Vanessa.

A familiar fear flickered across her face.

Her father noticed.

That frightened him more than anything else.

"You don't have to be afraid," he said quietly. "Not anymore."

The words felt strange to Lily.

Not anymore.

She nodded and walked toward her room.

Only when her bedroom door clicked shut did her father turn toward Vanessa.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

"What happened here?"

Vanessa gave a small shrug.

"I already told you. She spilled juice."

"The floor was spotless."

"Children lie."

His eyes narrowed.

"Lily doesn't."

Vanessa laughed lightly.

"You've always been too soft with her."

He glanced at the rag still lying on the marble floor.

Then at the wet sleeves.

Then at the small marks on the floor where Lily's knees had been.

"How long?"

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

"How long has she been scrubbing floors?"

Vanessa's confident expression cracked for the first time.

"You’re overreacting."

His voice became dangerously calm.

"How long?"

Vanessa looked away.

And in that tiny movement, he got his answer.

Far longer than a single afternoon.

Far longer than today.

The realization hit him like a punch.

While he was working late.

While he thought Lily was safe.

While he trusted someone to care for his daughter.

She had been suffering alone.

And she had learned to hide it.

That was the part he could not forgive.

May you like

Not what Vanessa had done.

But what Lily had learned because of it.
