Chapter 4: A Promise Kept

One year later.
Sunlight filled the apartment.
The marble floors gleamed.
But no one knelt on them anymore.
Lily sat cross-legged on the sofa, laughing as she sorted through a box of old photographs.
Her father was beside her.
In his hands was the same white bakery box.
A tradition.
The anniversary of her mother's passing had come again.
But this year felt different.
Healthier.
Lighter.
Together they looked through photographs and shared stories.
Lily pointed at one picture.
"Mom looks happy here."
"She was."
"And I think she'd be happy now too."
Her father smiled.
"I think so."
Lily leaned against his shoulder.
The apartment felt warm.
Safe.
Like home.
After a moment she asked, "Dad?"
"Yeah?"
"You came home early that day."
His smile softened.
"The best decision I ever made."
Lily squeezed his hand.
"No."
He looked at her.
She smiled.
"Keeping me was."
For a second he couldn't speak.
Then he pulled her into a hug.
Outside, life moved on.
Inside, a little girl who had once learned to cry without making a sound had learned something better.
She had learned that love listens.
That truth matters.
May you like
And that the people who truly care will always come back for you.
The End.
